Babies with unsymetrical skull growth are always the victim of CIDS as per my knowledge. If your baby has this type of skull growth, please invest on MRI imaging of the skull if you love your baby.

Naa moy kaila nga victim ani ang anak? Why does most Americans fear it?

It is a major concern for the medical profession here in the United States; namely because SIDs is the major cause of death of babies from 0-1 years old. It is also known as 'crib' death by many pediatricians as it affects babies that have not yet left the crib. There are multiple causes of SIDs, ranging from physical abuse of the child, drug related causes (such as the mother taking opioids, narcotics etc).

SIDs is imperative here in the US because the United States takes priority in children, taking care of children and intervening for the rights of children when the parents are physically or verbally abusive. The Untied States government as well as the United States Health Care Industry prioritizes on the welfare of children, especially the babies. Americans prioritize themselves, that is fact. Children are the next generation. There is no question about it, it is already expected.

Things to do to prevent SIDs:

    *  Placing babies on their backs to sleep, even for short naps - "tummy time" is for when babies are awake and someone is watching
    * Using a firm sleep surface, such as a crib mattress covered with a fitted sheet
    * Keeping soft objects and loose bedding away from sleep area
    * Making sure babies don't get too hot - keep the room at a comfortable temperature for an adult

Mr. Ferniz,

You're right that there is no clear and established cause for SIDs, pero there have been studies. The following is a study by the Mayo Clinic in the United States, the leading medical think tank in the region.

Causes

Over the years, researchers have investigated and ruled out a number of possible causes of sudden infant death syndrome, including suffocation, vomiting or choking, birth defects, metabolic abnormalities, and infection.

Exactly why SIDS occurs remains elusive, but many experts believe there are probably multiple factors that cause SIDS. For example, it's likely that an infant must have some sort of biological vulnerability, such as a heart or brain defect, combined with an environmental stressor, such as stomach sleeping, before SIDS can occur.

These things must also occur during a critical developmental period in the baby's life, typically during the first six months. These three factors — vulnerability, critical developmental period and outside stressor — combine to form what's known as the triple-risk model.

Research offers clue
In 2006, researchers discovered that abnormalities in a part of the brain that helps control breathing and arousal likely play a role in SIDS. Other research has focused on the way babies breathe while they're asleep — especially their response to low blood oxygen levels (hypoxia) — and on heart function.

Researchers are also continuing to investigate the link between SIDS and long QT syndrome, a subtle electrical disturbance in the heart that causes sudden, extremely rapid heart rates. A 2007 study found that almost one in 10 babies who died of SIDS had a genetic defect in one of the genes responsible for long QT syndrome. If you have a history of SIDS in your family, your doctor will want to check for the presence of long QT syndrome in your infant. This can usually be done withanelectrocardiogram (ECG) and confirmed, if necessary, with genetic studies.

One thing that is known is that childhood immunizations don't play a role in sudden infant death syndrome. After reviewing the available evidence in 2005, the American Academy of Pediatrics concluded that vaccines don't increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

Risk factors

Although sudden infant death syndrome can strike any infant, researchers have identified several factors that may increase a baby's risk. At higher risk are babies who are:

    * Male. Boy babies are more likely to die of SIDS than girl babies are.
    * Between 1 and 6 months of age. Infants are most vulnerable in the second and third months of life.
    * Premature or of low birth weight. Your baby is more susceptible to SIDS if he or she was premature or had a low birth weight.
    * Black or American Indian. For reasons that aren't well understood, race appears to play a role in SIDS. Cultural differences in child care practices — such as whether babies are placed to sleep on their backs — may be a factor.
    * Placed to sleep on their stomachs. Babies who sleep on their stomachs are much more likely to die of SIDS than are babies who sleep on their backs. At highest risk are babies who are used to sleeping on their backs and are suddenly switched to stomach sleeping. At one time, doctors recommended stomach sleeping because babies rest more soundly in that position. But it's now known that stomach sleeping greatly increases a baby's risk.
    * Born to mothers who smoke or use drugs. Smoking cigarettes during or after your pregnancy puts your baby at considerably higher risk of SIDS. Using drugs such as cocaine, heroin or methadone while you're pregnant also increases the risk.
    * Exposed to environmental tobacco smoke. Infants exposed to secondhand smoke have a higher risk of SIDS.
    * Born in the fall or winter months. More SIDS cases occur when the weather is cooler.

Also at risk are babies whose mothers had:

    * Inadequate prenatal care
    * Placental abnormalities — such as placenta previa, a condition where the placenta lies low in the uterus, sometimes covering the opening of the cervix
    * Low weight gain during pregnancy
    * Their first pregnancy at a young maternal (under 20)

Important man jud to let the baby burp after feeding, because babies aren't mobile, the air that they swallow during feedings can stay trapped inside. If this air isn't burped up, it will work its way out through the GI tract, which will lead to complications for an infant who is not yet fully developed.

Babies are not only 'little adults', but they are very sensitive and fragile beings. Parents, always be careful and gentle with your little ones. Babies are a gift, worth more than any money in this earth.

Lorenzo,

I remembered that there is a connection and a great significance as to why Blacks & American Indians are more prone to SIDS. I suddenly remembered one of my research in the ancient artform of "Head Shaping" only performed by Blacks in Africa and American Indians and some part in Asia.

This artform is done by applying a flat object at the forehead during infant stage where the skull is still soft.

I feel there is a great connection. http://www.springerlink.com/content/bkx5jv2qmdhna7mn/

There is a strong correlation to it, Mr. Ferniz.

You know I never knew about these cultural practices until you shared it with us. Salamat kaayo, yes, it does fit in to the SIDs prevalence on these two racial groups.

Thank you, sir.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrone also known as Crib Death

latest research shows that there are things you can do to make your baby safer
1. Put your baby on his or her back to sleep.
2. Make sure no one smokes around your baby.
3. Avoid putting too many clothes and covers on your baby.
4. Breastfeed your baby, it may give some protection against SIDS.

We in the Medical field always recommend nursing mothers and caring fathers to adhere to the 'Back to Sleep' Campaign.

To prevent instance of SIDS, it is best to put one's baby to sleep on his/her back.

Statistically, it has reduced instances of SIDS.

I would like to share to you my experience,  my first child Mayumi has a stressful birth I have had dry labor and waited 3 days. They used vacuum and it was so strong that she got a big hematome in her head. She got an Apgar score of 8, she did not breath for the first 2 minutes. I panicked because the doctor said there is a probability that she will be 25% mentally retarded. This has caused me to learn to read books in German about raising a baby. She slept with us in our bed. I always combed her hair, massage her tiny hands and feet. I sang to her to sleep and even while asleep I let my cassette running with some songs. I was not able to breast feed her because I did not have enough to feed her. She grew fast and 7 months she could walk all on her own.
I have read that the first 2 years must be an intensive caring, after this 24 months, a child will be less susceptible to sickness and most likely to be happy and stable.
SIDS is also prevalent here in Germany.

Pacifiers Reduce Sudden Infant Deaths, New Study Suggests
« Reply #64 on: February 13, 2009, 06:32:12 AM »
Use of a pacifier seems to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), finds a study published online by theBritish Medical Journal.

Researchers in California interviewed mothers or carers of 185 infants who died and 312 randomly selected controls matched for race/ethnicity and age.

They obtained information on pacifier use during the index sleep (defined as the last sleep or the sleep during the night before the interview), on other environmental factors related to sleep, and on risk factors for SIDS.

After adjusting for known risk factors, use of a pacifier during sleep was associated with a 90% reduced risk of SIDS compared with infants who did not use a pacifier.

The reduced risk was consistent across a wide range of social and economic characteristics and risk factors examined.

The reduced risk also seemed to be stronger when an infant was in an adverse sleep environment (such as sleeping prone or on the side, sleeping with a mother who smoked, or sleeping on soft bedding), although these differences did not reach significance.

"Use of a pacifier is associated with a substantial reduction in the risk of SIDS," say the authors. "Our results also provide some evidence that use of a pacifier may reduce the impact of other risk factors for SIDS, especially those related to adverse sleep conditions."

They suggest that the use of pacifiers may be an effective strategy for public health intervention.

Bedsharing, Even With Non-smoking Parents, May Increase Risk Of SIDS
ScienceDaily (July 7, 2005) — Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the leading reason given for death among infants one month to one year old. Studies have shown that sharing a bed with parents who smoke increases the risk of SIDS. A study in the July issue of The Journal of Pediatrics found a relationship between SIDS and bedsharing among infants less than 11 weeks old, even if parents are non-smokers.
