My response:

Nitric oxide is responsible for the increase in cGMP, which facilitates smooth muscle relaxation, which leads to vasodilation and leads to an pro-erectile state.

Sildenafil (brand name: Viagra) inhibits cGMP breakdown, thus, leading to prolonged state of smooth muscle relaxation, vasodilation and thus, your penis remains erect longer.

Men, if you are taking nitrates and other vasodilators to treat your underlying angina pectoris , or taking any anti-hypertensive drugs, it is best to evade taking VIAGRA. Viagra's major side effect is --> HYPOTENSION. If you are taking NITRATES (nitroglycerin, nitruprusside) already , a combination of SILDENAFIL will result in lethal hypotension.
