Health and dental experts on Tuesday warned Filipinos that oral sex with a partner with genital warts can increase the risk of cancerâ€"even more than smoking and drinking.

The finding linking a virus that causes genital warts to oral cancer was tackled at a recent joint scientific conference of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) and the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) as part of this year’s celebration of National Cancer Consciousness Week.

People who have had more than five oral sex partners were nine times more likely to have cancer of the tonsils, tongue or throat, said the PMA, referring to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

In a statement Tuesday, the PMA cited studies showing that the human papilloma virus (HPV), mainly responsible for cervical cancer among women, can also cause oral cancer in both men and women who engage in unprotected oral sex.

Not only genital warts, a person can also get HSV-2, Herpes Simplex Virus 2 , if receiving oral sex from someone who has Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 or 2 in the mouth (oral herpetical ulcers)

For women who are receiving oral sex from men who have oral herpes (or even some women), a result is HSV-2 infection. Women who have vaginal herpes experience excruciating pain during the blistering and ulceration of the infection site. Again, there is also a high risk of cancer formation in the area of ulcer formation.
