simple guide to how to avoid becoming overweight or obese
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Obesity is a growing problem in adults and children which can reduce your life expectancy. It can create serious health problems and means you are at greater risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.
Two simple ways that you can prevent this for both yourself and your family are:-
• Keep physically active
• Eat health regular meals
What are the causes?
Obesity is caused by imbalance – when you cannot burn off the amount of energy taken into the body as calories in food through your physical activity.
Tips on keeping active:
The recommended levels of exercise are:-
• For adults; at least 30 minutes moderate activity five times a week
• For children; at least an hour a day of moderate activity.
This can be any activity which makes you warm, slightly out of breath but allows you to still be able to talk.
Try to make it fun and part of your regular day, for example, walking to school, playing outside, dancing, gardening, cycling etc.
Start slowly and build up bit by bit.
If you have been inactive for a long time or have health problems, speak to your GP or health worker before you start your regime.
Tips on healthy eating
• Have regular meals and enjoy your food
• No food is taboo but you need a balance of different food (fruit and vegetables, protein, starch and fibre foods, milk and dairy products)
• Avoid a lot of food which is high in fat and sugar, for example, chips, sugary drinks, sweets, crisps, pies etc
• Have five portions of fruit and vegetables a day
• If you drink alcohol do so in moderation
• For adults; keep your Body Mass Index under 30 (weight in kilograms divided by metres squared). You can ask your GP or health worker for more details about this.
If you need any further advice speak to your GP or health worker or visit some of the websites below.
