       I have to dig this email i got from my niece after reading Macky's fascinating childhood stories.This is for us who were born in the 50's, 60's and 70's! Who had live in the era where there were so mush to relate to the newer generations.

*First, some of us survived being born to mothers who did not have an OB-Gyne and drank San Miguel Beer while they carried us. While pregnant, they took cold or cough medicine, ate isaw, and didn't worry about diabetes.

*Then after all that trauma, our baby cribs were made of hard wood covered with lead-based paints, pati na yung walker natin, matigas na kahoy din at wala pang gulong.

*We had no soft cushy cribs that play music, no disposable diapers (lampin lang), and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, no kneepads , sometimes wala pang preno yung bisikleta.

*As children, we would ride in hot un-airconditioned buses with wooden seats (yung JD bus na pula), or cars with no airconditioning & no seat belts (ngayon lahat may aircon na)

*Riding on the back of a carabao on a breezy summer day was considered a treat.

*We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle purchased from 711 ( minsan straight from the faucet or poso) We shared one soft drink bottle with four of our friends, and NO ONE actually died from this. Or contacted hepatitis.

*We ate rice with star margarine, drank raw eggs straight from the shell, and drank sofdrinks with real sugar in it (hindi diet coke), but we weren't sick or overweight kasi nga...... WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

*We would leave home in the morning and play all day, and get back when the streetlights came on. Sarap mag patintero, tumbang preso , habulan at taguan. No one was able to reach us all day ( di uso ang cellphone , walang beepers ) . And yes, we were O.K.

*We would spend hours building our wooden trolleys (yung bearing ang gulong) or plywood slides out of scraps and then ride down the street , only to find out we forgot the brakes! Error! Filename not specified. After hitting the sidewalk or falling into a canal (seweage channel) a few times, we learned to solve the problem ourselves with our bare & dirty hands

*We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 100 channels on cable, no DVD movies, no surround stereo, no IPOD's, no cell phones, no computers, no Internet, no chat rooms, and no Friendsters....... ...WE HAD REAL FRIENDS and we went outside to actually talk and play with them!

*We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no stupid lawsuits from these accidents. The only rubbing we get is from our friends with the words..masakit ba ? pero pag galit yung kalaro mo,,,,ang sasabihin sa iyo..beh buti nga  ! :P

*We played marbles (jolens) in the dirt , washed our hands just a little and ate dirty ice cream & fish balls. we were not afraid of getting germs in our stomachs.

*We had to live with homemade guns " gawa sa kahoy, tinali ng rubberband , sumpit , tirador at kung ano ano pa na puedeng makasakitan..pero masaya pa rin ang lahat.

*We made up games with sticks ( syatong ), and cans ( tumbang preso )and although we were told they were dangerous, wala naman tayong binulag o napatay.paminsan minsan may nabubukulan lang.

*We walked, rode bikes, or took tricycles to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them to jump out the window!

*Mini basketball teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't pass had to learn to deal with the disappointment.

*That generation of ours has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, creative thinkers and successful professionals ever! They are the CEO's, Engineers, Doctors and Military Generals of today.

*The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

*We had failure, success, and responsibility. We learned from our mistakes the hard way.

*It kind of makes you wanna go out and climb a tree, doesn't it?!

PS - The big letters are because your eyes may not be able to read this if they were typed any smaller (at your age) ;D.

Did you regret that you were born in the past? I never did...

When we were away from home, the regular way to keep in touch with the family in the province was through letters sent by mail (which we now call snail mail) or handcarried by a returning townmate and for urgent matters, such as when we ran out of allowance before the next padala, by telegram...  The days and even weeks of waiting did not seem as eternal and did not trigger as much panic as when anybody in the family these days fails to pick up the mobile phone after ten rings, or after two or three calls.

The price of rice and other other staples occasionally went up then as now, especially during prolonged dry season or draughts. But even if we had to eat lugaw or rice mixed with milled mais, we did not feel as deprived as our children these days when they see their classmates having the latest brand of cellular phone.

When we were young, we have to walk from home to school all by ourselves but now, our nieces and nephews had to be escorted every time they go to school.

Kong mag ulan, mag share mi payong.  We had no choice but to squeeze in to fit in our single payong - a dilapidated one na kon hanginon pa mabaliktan pa tawon.  And when that happened, mangatawa pa mi!  Or some will have to use dahon sa saging or gabi to cover our head and yet simbako lang wa may nangasakit ug pneumonia tawon.

I remember when my younger brothers and sisters were still babies, my Mom supplemented her milk with Alpine.  Kaluoy sa Ginoo, di man mga buringog except for the boys na "genetically" bugoy na! ;D

Belle, I was born in 1977, na experienced nako most of it. Labina ang syato, mao nay akong paborito nga duwaan sauna. Apil natong mareng-mareng using tsinelas bitaw.

I can go on and on and on sa mga maanindot nga experiences without high technology and yet it was so much fun!

Daw beh, ayaw nato limtan na magpakulog ug buhok using stalks sa dahon sa balanghoy ug mag kutiks using kadtong weeds na naay lingin na liso, mang lipstik using the strawberry candy.  Mag bay-bay (play house) unya gamiton dayon ang dinukdok na dahon sa gumamela as a mock oil and the kendiment candy and uban pang candy wrappers as money.  ;D

"those were the days my friend..
we thought it never ends for we were YOUNG
Yes,  those were the days."

I was 2nd year high school when this song was on the top hit. Nice and funny experiences in life, really happy and more than as precious, incomparable and I felt I was really at the Top of the World.  As child living in the barrio nga lampara ang suga, we didn't have even a flashlight but "langkay" served the purpose. Nagsinilas pa gani ko ug ligid sa trak sa dihang ning apil ko ug exam for typing and stonography  entrance, kay gikan pa kong nang-ngahoy, gadali-dali.  And I got that job. 10 centavos pay plete sa trysikol sa una sa Tagb.

hehehe, nalingaw pod ko pag-ayo oi. Ganahan gyud ko maghisgot aning mga butanga kay it will bring me back there even just for a few minutes in my own head lang.

Ug yes, pareha ta ug gi kyutiks, sewetes hehehe

Annie, tinuod gyud ka nga on top of the world kay adtong mga panahuna, we never got scared, we always feel safe and secured all the time, mao na murag diha tay feeling of contentment bisag wala pay high technology ato. Nakanumdom pod ko anang tsinilas nga ligid, murag lig-onon baya to sya.

Unya manilong sa waiting shed nga nagtulo pod kay made of nipa man nga nangabuslot napod hehehe

Ania puy aho nga sigurado ko nga daghan puy nakaagi:

mag-ugom og luwa sa baba aron ipabuto ang mga liso anang sagbot nga violet og buwak;
manaka sa kaimito, labina kung sinaw na ang bunga, bisan pa'g gabok ang sanga;
maglanlan sa liso sa ipil-ipil, nga tambal pod og bitok;
mamutol og dahon sa saging ug himuong banig ang dahon ug himuong armalite, pusil, ug palak-palak ang stalk;
magkuskus sa bani sa saging aron itambal sa samad;
manguha og kahoy sa silingan aron ipensing-pensing (human mangabali, iuli);
magluto og nilugaw sa lata og sardinas;
magsud-an og toyo, edibol,  ug asin;
mangitag bujangjang nga ibala sa luthang (pwede ra pu'g papel);
magdagan nga nagkarang;
;D Great times!

BOC Bambi talked about lampara. Way tutor to, sariling paningkamot with the flicker of lampara...

It was fun.  Mag hide and seek, mag bato lata, mag hatum, magkaon liso sa kulo or liso sa nangka na gi lung-ag!

One thing I remember that is so yucky even thinking about it now kadto bitaw mag "supa" ug saging ipakaon sa bata? We got to "supa" too for our younger siblings.  How unhygienic but wa man intawon nangahilo adto ba? hahahaha  Karon naa na sila'y baby food in bottle.

In a way, they are controlled exposures of the infant to bacteria and other pathogens. They say it also strengthens the bond between parent and child.

*We would leave home in the morning and play all day, and get back when the streetlights came on. Sarap mag patintero, tumbang preso , habulan at taguan. No one was able to reach us all day ( di uso ang cellphone , walang beepers ) . And yes, we were O.K.

*We would leave home in the morning and play all day, and get back when the streetlights came on. Sarap mag patintero, tumbang preso , habulan at taguan. No one was able to reach us all day ( di uso ang cellphone , walang beepers ) . And yes, we were O.K.

Sa una isinggit ra man ngan nato ug pangitaon sa ginikanan. Ordinary telephone was a luxury then. Now the cell phone is a must. Personally, ako pud murag wa koy kamot ug way dalang cellphone.

TO ALL FOLKS WHO WERE BORN IN THE

1950's, 60' s,  70's  and early 80's !!

First, some of us   s urvived being born to mothers who did not have an OB-Gyne and drank San Miguel Beer while they carried us.

While pregnant, they took cold or cough medicine,  a te Linunod, balikutsa, bukhayo  and didn't worry about diabetes.

Then after all that trauma, our baby cribs were made of hard wood covered with lead-based paints, ang uban kay duyan nga habol gihigtan ug pisi nga inigtabyog ug kusog ma pakong intawon ta sa bongbong.

We had no soft cushy cribs that play music, no disposable diapers (lampin lang sa General Milling nga naa'y faded picture nga nag-salute), and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, no kneepads, wala pa gyu'y break ang bisikleta.

As children, we would ride in hot un-airconditioned buses with wooden seats (Bisaya Bus nga pultahan puros ang kilid, Corominas Bus nga senimana ang brake), or cars with no airconditioning & no seat belts   (karon kay Minibus na nga nindot kaayo ug sounds or Ceres Bus nga bugnaw ug aircon)

Riding on the back of a carabao  on a breezy summer day was considered a treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT bottled mineral water sa Nature Spring or Viva, or Absolute Mineral water (usahay gani, straight from the faucet or poso or Tabay!)

We shared one soft drink bottle with four of our friends, and NO ONE actually died from this. Or contacted hepatitis.

We ate rice with star margarine, bahaw nga gibutangan ug asin ug mantika sa baboy, drank raw eggs straight from the shell,  and drank sofdrinks with real sugar in it (dili diet coke or Pepsi Max), but we weren't sick or overweight kay......

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, and get back when the streetlights came on. Syatong, Bato-Lata, Bagol, Dakop-Dakop, Tago-Tago, Ngita'g Kaka.

No one was able to reach us all day ( wala pa'y uso ang cellphone) . And yes, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our wooden trolleys (katong bearing ang ligid) or Karitong Kawayan nga karaang tsinilas ang giporma nga ligid and then ride down the street , wala ma'y gidungog nga naligsan atoh!  After hitting the sidewalk or falling into a canal (sewage channel) a few times, we learned to solve the problem ourselves with our bare & dirty hands .

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 100 channels on cable, no DVD movies, no surround stereo, no IPOD's,  no cell phones, no computers, no Internet, no chat rooms, and no Friendsters. ........ ...WE HAD REAL FRIENDS and we went outside to actually talk and play with them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no stupid lawsuits from these accidents. The only rubbing we get is from our friends with the words..sakit bai ? pero kung kontra gani nimo ang imong kadula,,,,singgitan lang dayon ug..Mayra,Gabaan!

We played marbles (jolen) in the dirt , washed our hands just a little and ate Pan Bahug-bahug & Bagumbayan (recycled bread man diay to kay wala mahalin!) We were not afraid of getting germs in our stomachs.

We had to live with homemade guns (giporma nga kahoy, gihigtan ug garter ug lastiko) , saplong , tirador ug uban pa nga pwedeng magkasakitay. Pero lingaw gihapon kaayo ang tanan.

We made up games with sticks ( syatong ), and cans ( Bato-Lata )and although we were told they were dangerous, wala man gyud to'y actual nga nabuta bah, bukol lang nuon sa agtang naa.

We walked, rode bikes, or took tricycles to a friend's house and knocked on the door or batoon ug gagmay nga bato ang bungbong, or just yelled for them to jump out the window!

Mini basketball teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't pass had to learn to deal with the disappointment.

That generation of ours has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, creative thinkers and successful professionals ever! They are the CEO's, Engineers, Doctors and Military Generals of today.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had failure, success, and responsibility. We learned from our mistakes the hard way.

You might want to share this with others who've had the luck to grow up as real kids. We were lucky indeed.

And if you like, forward it to your kids too, so they will know how brave their parents were.

It kind of makes you wanna go out and climb a tree, doesn't it?!

PS - The big letters are because your eyes may not be able to read this if they were typed any smaller (at your age? Duh!).
