Daily aspirin may do more harm than good: study
By AFP - Mon Aug 31, 6:00 AM PDT

LONDON (AFP) - Healthy people taking a daily dose of aspirin to prevent heart attacks may be doing themselves more harm than good, according to a new study by British scientists.

Researchers found that the risks of bleeding from taking aspirin were such that its routine use in healthy people "cannot be supported" -- although they did not dispute its use in patients with a history of vascular problems.

The results of the Aspirin for Asymptomatic Atherosclerosis (AAA) study add to a long-running debate about whether the potential dangers of taking aspirin could outweigh the benefits from reducing the risk of clots.

"We know that patients with symptoms of artery disease, such as angina, heart attack or stroke, can reduce their risk of further problems by taking a small dose of aspirin each day," said Professor Peter Weissberg, medical director of the British Heart Foundation which helped fund the research.

"The findings of this study agree with our current advice that people who do not have symptomatic or diagnosed artery or heart disease should not take aspirin, because the risks of bleeding may outweigh the benefits."

The study was led by Professor Gerry Fowkes from the Wolfson Unit for Prevention of Peripheral Vascular Diseases in Edinburgh, Scotland, and presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Barcelona Sunday.

It involved 3,350 men and women aged 50 to 75 years who tests revealed may have a condition where the arteries in their legs were furred up -- but who had no symptoms of heart disease or history of heart attack.

They were given either a daily 100 mg dose of aspirin or a placebo (a dummy pill) and monitored over eight years.

While there was no difference in the number of heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular events suffered, major bleeding occurred in two percent of the aspirin group compared to just 1.2 percent of the placebo group.

My understanding here is that if you already have the condition, that is, if you have symptoms of artery disease, it's OK to take aspirin daily. What the study says is that it is not advisable for persons who are healthy in this regard.

Pero mao lagi ni, kitang laymen mosamot kakutaw atong utok aning mga research-research.

Mr. Daray,

Aspirin is taken with any other anti-platelets for the prevention thrombosis and continued buildup of fibro-fatty plaque (atherosclerosis). If you have a cardiothoracic condition, then it is a drug therapy for the prevention of MI (myocardial infarct).

The typical drug regimen we prescribe to a patient with a heart condition is giving them thrombolytics (streptokinase) as well as heparin/warfarin and aspirin for long term therapy.

If your physician has advised you to this treatment regimen, I highly advise you to maintain it. :)

Addendum:

Just to widen the understanding, the mechanism of action for Thrombolytics (Streptokinase) is the break up of fibrin, which is responsible for the cementing of the secondary hemostatic plug, which is the cause for the development of atherosclerosis and fibro-fatty agglutination.

When the patient has a heavily clogged artery, we give the patient streptokinase, which breaks up the thrombosis. Unfortunately, when the large thrombosis breaks apart, it forms multiple small microthrombi, which has the potential for the development of a long term thrombotic situation. This is where heparin/warfarin/asprin comes in. These three drugs are given as an anti-platelet, blood thinner in the prevention of the microthrombi from forming and from sticking to one another. Therefore, it is imperative for heart attack patients and or the prevention of high-risk MI patients.

Please talk to your physician before stopping aspirin medication, especially if you have a cardiac history or a heart problem.

Thank you for your consideration, Mr. Daray.

Yours Truly,
A. Lorenzo Salise Lucino Jr.
