Hypothyroidism


Symptoms: Cold intolerance (decreased heat production), weight gain, decreased appetite, hypoactivity, lethargy, fatigue, weakness, constipation, decreased reflexes, myxedema (facial/periorbital), dry, cool skin; coarse , brittle hair


Lab findings: Increased TSH (sensitive test for primary hyperthyroidism), decreased total T4, decreased free T4, decreased T3 uptake

Hyperthyroidism


Symptoms: Heat intolerance (increased heat production), weight loss, increased appetite, hyperactivity, diarrhea, increased reflexes, chest pain, palpitations, arrhythmias, warm, most skin, fine hair


Lab Findings: Decreased TSH (if primary), increased total T4, increased free T4, increased T3 uptake
