The 57-year-old Irishman was blinded two years ago after an aluminum explosion at a recycling plant, AFP reported Thursday. His sight has been miraculously restored after doctors inserted his son’s tooth in his eye.

"I thought that I was going to be blind for the rest of my life," McNichol told RTE state radio, AFP reported.

After doctors told McNichol there was nothing more they could do for him, he heard about an offbeat operation called Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis (OOKP) being performed in England.

OOKP, first performed in Italy in the 1960s, involves creating an artificial cornea by using the patient’s tooth and surrounding bone as a support, AFP reported.

McNichol’s son Robert, 23, donated a tooth, its root and part of his jaw for his father’s surgery. McNichol’s right eye socket was rebuilt, and a lens was inserted into a hole drilled in Robert’s tooth. The procedure required two surgeries lasting a total of 15 hours.

"It is pretty heavy going," McNichol told RTE state radio. "I have enough sight to get around and I can watch television. I have come out from complete darkness to be able to do simple things.”

Its defined as "Implanted Corneal Lens"

:a plastic lens cemented into a section of decalcified tooth that is then stitched into an opening cut in a totally opaque cornea to restore vision. The lens may be implanted after normal corneal grafting has failed.

This is actually a very new procedure, medically speaking, and there have been modifications altered to increase periphery visions. ‘te this is rather ‘new and uncharted territory, so to say.

What they try to do is determine whether key properties of extracelluar matrix macromolecules can be replicated within tissue-engineered biosynthetic matrices to influence celluar properties and behavior. This does work because the hydrated collagen and N-isopropylacrylamide copolymer-based ECM are fabricated; the structural and immunological simplicity of the cornea and the importance of the extensive innervention allows this symbiosis to occur. The teeth has such capabilities. What happens is that  they graft the laminin adhesion pentapeptide motif, YIGSR and this actually promotes epithelial stratification and neurite in-growth. It actually regenerates the corneal epithelium, stroma, and the nerves. In particular, functional nerves will regenerate in implants. As we know there are mulitple nerves within the facio-skeletal structure. Hypothetically speaking 'te, they can even use this to stimulate neuritic-in growth in other nervous regions. The problem is making it small enough to allow regrowth of small nerves in the cranial super structure or the regrowth in broken spinal column without harming the spinal nerves (which if done could kill the person). But hypothetically they can even harness this and allow nervitic re-growth of spinal nerves.

Technology will have to develop to allow the procedure to introduce such laminin micromolecularly.
And to do this, science and researchers need to test this on animal models before they can even proceed with human models. Then it will take more years to pass a medical board, a review board, etc etc.

Its possible. The problem is the method in completing it. Technology is still a lingering problem. :P

Its weird, how such a simple tooth can allow this. But its explained biochemically.

‘te, the way God designed us is IMPECCABLE.
That’s all I can say.

Salamat for the explanation, Dong!  I could never had had thought that tooth can be used in the eye!

Yes, I agree with you that the way God designed us is impeccable!

Actually, one of my research colleagues in the neuroscience department is doing the same thing, only she is doing this on the Rattus norvegicus (norwegian rat). Its actually interesting what they do, they damage the cornea of said number of rats and in different trials, place a rat teeth in place of the cornea and record neuritic in growth, also having a control group in hand.

There have been negative results, but positive results have been manifested in testing the specimen's ability to react to light, darkness. There is a positive indication of increased occular-motion to specimens with the said surgery implant than the rats in other trials with no implant, but just a damaged cornea.
