Smokers must make up their minds to quit smoking either using
Stop smoking medication or some other natural methods. Whatever be the methods, the smoker has to face the withdrawal symptoms while quitting. This makes quitting tougher. There are some ways too to minimize the effects of the withdrawal symptoms.
One of the major withdrawal symptoms is fatigue, sleepiness and drowsiness. Nicotine constricts the blood vessels and hence stresses out the heart and ultimately the heart beat increases. When one quits smoking, the heart beat decreases thus slowing down the metabolism. This makes a person, tired, sleepy and lethargic. It is a good idea to take cat naps, going to bed earlier or drinking fruit juice or water. It is important to get sufficient rest.
While smoking, the gums and throat are affected. The gums develop a crusty tissue to protect itself from cigarette smoke. When one quits smoking, this hard and crusty tissue comes off and it is replaced by new, soft baby tissue. This leads to sore mouth and bleeding gums.
A person becomes more irritable while quitting smoking. Irritability is caused due to fluid retention. There are 2 ways the quitter can reduce irritability. One must drink as much water as possible and avoid foods that are rich in sodium. Food like soups, pickles, packaged or processed foods which are rich in salts should be cut down. Salt leads to water retention and that further leads to making the quitter cranky. Women find it more difficult to stop smoking as it affects hormones. As women have more hormones they are more affected by quitting smoking.
