Medicinal properties of plant materials are well known and exploited in modern medicine many of them identified from the traditional knowledge. Coconut is the main plantation in Kerala and contributes in food, medicine and commercial interest of the society. Coconut kernel and oil are the chief ingredient of South Indian food and used in ayurvedic medicines. However, a lesser important material of coconut plant called “leaf sheath scales”, scales covering over the inner leaf sheaths, is used for wound healing in folklore medicine. no scientific records of this fact are not available on literature. The validity of this piece of information is analyzed in this project. Coconut sheath scales can be scratched out from inner leaf sheaths, the fibrous powder in nature. This can be applied in wound directly with a bandage of dry clean cloth. The wound stops bleeding and heals rapidly. This is considered good for even a fatal wound on skull. Since it is having a curing effect, we can consider this product is sterile for applying directly on wound; probably the soft powder of this material stimulates the clotting process and hence prevents bleeding. Some unknown chemical components of this may be stimulating the heeling process. The material may be also having some antibacterial activity. Since application of this material on the wound, do not develop antiseptic problem. Experimental proof these properties and isolation of the active ingredients identify this as a useful wound healing medicine easily available to villagers.
