It is time to settle the score once by separating the myths and facts about hair loss in men.
Experts say that androgenetic alopecia (AGA), the most common form of progressive hair loss, led plenty of men to suffer from serious socio-physical woes such as embarrassment, anxiety and stress due to change in their appearance --from full-grown thick hair to thinning hair or at its extreme condition of bald head.
According to the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), 50 percent of all males by age 40, or essentially, two out three men in their lifetime will suffer from AGA.
This statistics implies that plenty of men suffering from hair loss are susceptible to self-appearance and self-esteem issues, even anxiety and stress, over their hair loss.

Myth: Excessive use of hair products will lead to hair loss.
Fact: From shampoos and conditioners to gel and mousse, none of these products will cause hair loss. You can use these products as much as you'd like. You also don't need to use your shampoo or conditioner in rotation to prevent hair loss. In fact, it is recommended to clean your hair everyday with shampoo.
Myth: When you wear hats too often, you're bound
to lose your hair.
Fact. Hats don't cause hair loss at all. In order for a hat to cause that much damage, it has to be extremely tight that it cuts off the blood circulation to the follicles. Fortunately, most hats that people wear are rather loose.
Myth: Losing a handful of hair daily means you're on your way to baldness.
Fact: It is perfectly normal to lose about 50 to 100 hairs per day. The hair you lose will be replaced by new hair growing back. Remember that AGA or male pattern hair loss is not caused by massive amounts of hair falling out, but rather normal thickness hair being replaced by thinner and finer hair.
Myth: Stress cause
hair loss.
Fact: Hair loss can occur in extreme cases of stress or when surgery or some medical treatments are involved. It does not, however, cause male pattern hair loss. There is no need to worry about it because the lost hair will grow back eventually.
Once you start to go bald, there is no cure.
Fact: False medical treatment is in fact available for the effective treatment of AGA, which you can ask your doctors about. Having the proper medical advice on AGA is important, as there are many "miracle products" out there that claim to cure baldness - and just as their "no therapeutic claim" disclaimer implies, there is no evidence that they work.
"There are just some of the myths about
hair loss that, if not clarified, can easily result in misguided judgements on the condition and approaching the right treatment. The best way to get the right information and treatment is to seek medical help, said Dr. Adolfo Bornate Jr., a dermapathologist who was invited on a media forum by MSD on Thursday to discuss on AGA at the Mandarin Hotel in Makati.

Clarissa Cecilia Mijares, a cultural anthropologist and professor of Sociology and Anthropology at the Ateneo de Manila University said, in the Philippines, being bald now a days is not the issue with our machos being baldhead.
The issue now only concerns the shape of the head unlike in other culture, she said.
"I think it is best to just let nature takes it course and not to feel bad about being bald because others are also experiencing it. I think it is best that they talk to someone who is experiencing the same because of social integration, and the feel of the sense of belongingness will have them more confident about themselves," Mijares said.
