Alzheimer's Treatment Arrives

US scientists say they have successfully reversed the effects of Alzheimer's with experimental drugs.

The drugs target and boost the function of a newly pinpointed gene involved in the brain's memory formation.

In mice, the treatment helped restore long-term memory and improve learning for new tasks, Nature reports.

The same drugs - HDAC inhibitors - are currently being tested to treat Huntington's disease and are on the market to treat some cancers.

They reshape the DNA scaffolding that supports and controls the expression of genes in the brain. - BBC

This is a great article, Mike.

The role of HDAC inhibitors is that it blocks acetylase enzymes, which allow the hyperacetylation of histones.

With this, it leads to gene expression. Meaning, the genes that encode myelin sheath formation, which coats the neuron and allows neurotransmitter signals to travel in affero-effero pathways.

Memory, cognition, is therefore maintained, restored to a semblance of homeostasis.

In medical research as well as in papers by the New England Journal of Medicine, there are medical scientists that are researching on reanimating brain dead individuals.

Through selective Pluripotent hematopietic stem cells, some researchers were able to renaminate a brain-dead rat, which had no electric activity in its brain. Through stem cell experiment, the said rat's brain was reanimated. The rat, which was comatose for some time, was able to walk, eat, defecate again.

Given, this is just a clinical trial on rats, the fact is that it can be applied for humans, after clinical trials and passing health tests, of course.

The advance of medicine is incredible.
