Tea Helps Toughen Older Women's Hips

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 10 (HealthDay News) -- New Australian research suggests that having a cuppa (tea, that is) may help strengthen older women's hips.

"This study suggests that drinking tea in moderation can actually benefit your bones," said lead researcher Amanda Devine, a senior lecturer in the nutrition program at the School of Exercise, Biomedical and Health Science, Edith Cowan University, and adjunct senior lecturer at the University of Western Australia's School of Medicine and Pharmacology, in Perth.

"Those who drank tea in the study had a higher bone density over the four years that they were studied," she said. "These women lost less bone than those who did not drink tea. More than three-quarters of the women drank tea daily, and they consumed on average about three cups per day."

Outside experts called the findings intriguing but still preliminary.

"Some tea may be potentially helpful," said Paul Brandt, an associate professor of neuroscience and experimental therapeutics at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. "One or two cups of tea a day probably couldn't hurt, but I wouldn't say that it absolutely will help. It's possible that it could prevent some loss."

Prior research has suggested that drinking tea may improve bone mineral density in people at risk for osteoporosis, but the findings are not conclusive. One study found that drinking green tea might help ease the inflammation and pain of rheumatoid arthritis.

Fractures, especially hip fractures associated with osteoporosis, are a major source of disability in postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis causes the bones to become fragile and more likely to break. Although it primarily affects older women, osteoporosis can affect others as well.

The new study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, involved 1,500 elderly (70 to 85 years old) Australian women who participated in a five-year trial of the effect of calcium supplementation on osteoporotic hip fracture.

Information on tea consumption was collected at the beginning of the study for 275 participants, and all participants filled out a beverage consumption questionnaire at the end of the trial.

Bone mineral density at the hip was measured at years 1 and 5.

By the end of the study, bone mineral density at the hip was 2.8 percent greater in tea drinkers than in non-tea drinkers, the researchers found.

Over four years, tea drinkers lost an average of only 1.6 percent of their total hip bone mineral density, while non-tea drinkers lost 4 percent -- consistent with previous studies.

There was, however, no relationship between the amount of tea consumed and bone gains, which raises some questions about the mechanisms which might be responsible for the effect.

"We didn't see a dose-response to tea drinking -- that is, if you drank more tea, then your bones were even better," Devine said. "The lack of relationship may be due to the small numbers of tea drinkers in each group, once we started examining these data. When we just look at the whole group, we have more power to see a difference."

The authors speculated that certain components of tea, such as antioxidant flavonoids, might account for the benefit seen.

Flavonoids "have been shown to have a stimulatory effect on new cells that build bone in cell line studies," Devine explained. "Also, the weak estrogenic [effect] of phytoestrogens found in tea may be beneficial especially to older women whose levels of endogenous estrogen is low. Also, the addition of milk to tea will add calcium to the diet, which is also needed for healthy bones."

Great article, 'te. Tea is a great source of vitamins that are productive in preventing bone loss for women as well as men in their later stages of life. Tea is also effective as an anti-oxidant, and conducive for detoxification when trying to rid the body of chemicals, as it functions perfectly as a diuretic agent. Additionally, I also recommend the consumption of tea on a regular basis for those who have a family history of oncological problems because tea (particularly green and black tea) has anti-cancer properties of polyphenols. Some studies indeed suggested that tea's polyphenols may reduce risk of gastric, esophageal and skin cancers if one consumes 4 to 6 cups daily. Other laboratory studies have found that polyphenols help prevent blood clotting and lower cholesterol levels. Consumption of tea instead of high-sodium yielding liquids such as (soda, caffeine-based products, etc) is an effective way reducing hyptertension as well as cardiovascular problems (of course should be augmented with proper diet and exercise and prescription medicine---for those who are medically hypertensive/diabetic etc).

That's the reason why....you have a lighter delicate skin like th Chinese.  Pinoys loves that type! ;)

Drinking teas is very healthy but it will not  really lessen toughen older Women's hips.  We Pinays doesn't have this problem at all.
Getting older has the priorities getting all those offered negative effects in life....we could not stop it, but to retain the inner beauty counts much.
LOve and accept yourself as what you are and you will be happy and satisfied!

Why not drinking something which helps to make our "Bil-bils" smaller and lighter?  Exercises is the best way and less kaon ra gjod.  :'(

I can drink all kinds of tea, dong Bran. Except chamomile, I really don't like the smell.

hahaha mao lagi no? No matter what happens in the world, the pharmacologists etc will always benefit; kai with new diseases and new 'medical conditions', comes the need to treat these so called 'diseases'. Examples of this are RLS(restless leg syndrome): which is a neurological defficiency of ferratin, which leads to uncontrollable movement of the lower appendicular ligaments (indicative of terets syndrome); and the new mode of treatments for this is oral medical intake of iron (about 50 mcg) which has been proven to reduce RLS symptoms. Some physicians have outright given patients diagnosed with RLS with dopamine agonists such as ropinirole, pramipexole, carbidopa/levodopa.

What is rather alarming is that this so called 'medical condition' was unheard of in the past; and billions of dollars are invested in developing 'medical cures' for this rather 'new medical condition'.

Either way, the drug companies are profiting.

mine, how about apple/cinnamon tea? it's a matter of getting use to it. sa pilipinas pa sa una, earl grey tea akong imnon, kana ra gud pud naa sa teabag. naka suway man gud ko sa bo's, and they were so good.

bitaw ba, let's make a thread for recipes - kana kong wala pa otherwise sultii ko asa na dapita ang thread.  I don't mind sharing some recipes pero naay uban patented  ;) but when I share recipe, kitchen-tested na jud na naho. btw, happy and da binsi, na pm na nko tong toffee cookie recipe. ginger, i will also pm it to you. thanks!

Ginger, I have "patented" recipes but toffee cookie recipe is not one of them though I could say na that cookie is equally yummy.

daghan kaayo klase na tea. kon ma stress, naay for tension and stress tea baligya diha sa whole foods. it's really good.  tapos ganahan pod ko anang ilang detox tea but my fave of all time kana laging sensha in powder na kana. aho lang nang ibutang sa bottled water.  mao pod lagi, acquired taste jud kay mo ingon man uban smells like seaweeds daw. 

naa mo whole foods diha Ginger or elliots ba kaha kana mga health food store?

wapa pa ko kabawo ana Pinaybayan kay wala pa ko ka gamit ana though I need that hahahah.  Sa mga stores yata naay label nakabutang sa slimming tea.  Ambot ba pod unsay kalaki anang slimming tea. maayo pa kaon nlang ta healthy food ug panagsa food sinful food then drink lang regularly ug regular tea.  i am not a soda drinker man gud pod.
