The non-profit organization CISCRP (Center for Information and Study on Clinical Research Participation), hosted AWARE for All – Los Angeles, a free, interactive webinar on November 18th that:
Demystified clinical trials
Revealed what the experience is like for participants
Reviewed the roles and responsibilities of involved medical professionals
Reinforced the critical role that individuals who participate in clinical trials play in advancing new medicines and treatments
Attendees of the webinar were able to submit questions during the program via a secure platform.
The webinar included a facilitated conversation with patients, researchers and health care professionals after an overview presentation given by Dr. Jonathan Jackson, Ph.D., Director of Community Access, Recruitment, and Engagement (CARE) Research Center, Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard Medical School. Two health exercises were part of the online program—a memory/brain health exercise offered by Alzheimer’s Los Angeles and Reiki offered by WESpark Cancer Support Center. Attendees also had the opportunity to visit local and national health and wellness organizations who provided educational resources in the virtual exhibit alley.

Dr. Leanne Burnham of City of Hope shared her thoughts on certain factors that contribute to a positive study experience, such as trust in the institution, the team and when there is a patient-physician match and language matched materials that can help study participants feel more comfortable.
Tomma Hargraves, a clinical trial participant, credits her participation with surviving Stage 3 lung cancer 14 years ago. Since then, she has participated in other clinical trials and serves as a patient liaison helping others navigate clinical trials.
“At CISCRP, helping patients and the public learn about the importance of clinical research participation is at the heart of our mission. We’re extremely excited to have been able to present this online event with support from a diverse team of stakeholders from the Los Angeles community,” said Joan Chambers, Senior Director, CISCRP.
The AWARE for All – Los Angeles supporters include Allergy & Asthma Network, City of Hope, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, PALS for Health, Alzheimer’s LA, Debbie’s Dream Foundation, Alliance for a Better Community, Being Alive LA, WeSPARK Cancer Support Center, Providence Clinical Research, Peer Plus, and the AWARE Industry Consortium.
