If powdered milk is free of melamine, is it safe to drink?
DR. ANGEL RESPICIO: Sally Fallon in her article, “Dirty Secrets of the Food Processing Industry†has this to say on the production of powdered milk: “Liquid milk is forced through a tiny hole at high temperature and pressure, and then blown out into the air. This causes a lot of nitrates to form and the cholesterol in the milk to oxidize. All liquid reduced-fat milk (1%, 2%, skim milk) have dried powdered milk concentrate added to give them body.â€
What’s wrong with oxidized cholesterol?
Says Fallon, “Those of you who are familiar with my work know that pure unoxidized cholesterol is your best friend; you don’t have to worry about this natural cholesterol in your food (from full cream milk and egg yolks); however, you do not want to eat oxidized cholesterol. Oxidized cholesterol contributes to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, to atherosclerosis. So when you drink reduced-fat milk thinking that it will help you avoid heart disease, you are actually consuming oxidized cholesterol, which initiates the process of heart disease.â€
