An Actor's Struggles With Anxiety, Depression, and Addiction: Does a Role Become Reality?

There are many factors contributing to an actor's likelihood of struggling with issues such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem and substance abuse. One of them could be the nature of the acting profession. Does getting into the character's shoes by producing and re-experiencing certain emotional states become a habit at one point? It is quite possible that on the subconscious level confusion happens between what is acting and what reality is.
