Close this BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – A businessman was killed by a falling tree in a freak accident in Barangay (village) Villamonte, Bacolod City, police said.
Police Station 4 commander Chief Inspector Danilo Francisco, Station 4 commander, identified the victim as Pablo Sapio, 52, who was engaged in the landscaping business, when a 50-foot eucalyptus tree in his backyard that was being cut hit his left leg, causing him to fall to the ground.
Sapio was rushed to the Bacolod Doctor's Hospital but died while being treated due to a rupture in his spinal column that was caused by his fall, Francisco said.
He added that it took several minutes to extricate Sapio because his leg was pinned under the huge tree trunk.
Randy Lama, who was hired by Sapio along with an unidentified companion to cut the tree, surrendered to the police several hours after the incident, which happened on Wednesday.
Lama's co-worker was pulling the rope tied to the trunk of the tree when it fell, Francisco said.
Lama told the police that he did not hear what happened because of the noise from the chain saw and that he only found out about it when he saw several people helping Sapio, who was lying on the ground, he added.
Senior Police Officer 1 Rommel Parcon, who was tasked to investigate the incident, said Lama was released Thursday since Sapio's family did not file charges as they had accepted his death as a purely an accident.
