By Bohol ChronicleThe finest of Central Visayas’ local products are now on showcase at the 2008 Sandugo Regional Product and Raw Material Trade Fair with more than 80 exhibitors at the Island City Mall in Tagbilaran City.
The exhibition features the finest of the region’s One Town, One Product (OTOP) highlighting unique products and services that make use of indigenous raw materials and local ingenuity.
“A quick look at the products being exhibited in the trade fair will reveal the extent to which we have developed our local crafts and ethnic food from practically nothing to that of a thriving export-oriented industry,†said Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) regional director Asteria Caberte during the opening of the showcase yesterday.
This will be the 20th year of the DTI initiated trade fair, according to Caberte, where the participants are coming from the tourism, food, fashion accessories, crafts, gifts, toys and housewares, and information and communications technology sectors.
Craft producers in Central Visayas are also displaying prototypes of their work with world class quality after a series of trainings and one-on-one consultations with expert designers, Caberte said during a press conference with DTI provincial directors and some mayors from the region.
Caberte said that the fair will also feature a raw materials gallery to afford buyers and product designers with a choice of materials to use that will also be complemented with craft demonstrations for the interested public.
There are also presenters from Mindanao, Eastern Visayas and Southern Luzon.
Jay Yuvallos, president of Philippine Export Companies (Philexport) Cebu, said the product and raw materials fair is not only an opportunity to showcase local products but to develop competitive, viable small-medium enterprises (SMEs) at the same time generating jobs for creative and skilled traditional craftsmen who can come up with world-class products.
