Swine Flu Concern
By Ven Arigo

Measures against deadly pig virus
expected to intensify in next few days
----------------------------------------------

Bohol’s alert is expected to intensify in the next few days against any possibility of entry to the province of the dreaded African swine fever (ASF) virus, which has been suspected causing the high rate of hog deaths in Luzon.

Provincial Administrator Kathyrin Fe Pioquinto and Dr. Stella Marie Lapiz, the provincial veterinarian, for the purpose led a serious coordination meeting at the new capitol this afternoon.

In a press statement before leaving for Manila today, Gov. Arthur Yap said he was ordering the temporary ban on the transportation of live pigs, pork and pork-related products into Bohol unless accompanied by proper documentations from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) and National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).

The ASF virus have already entered through its vectors, like imported pork and pork-related PRODUCTS, in a number of European countries, and Myanmar and Hong Kong in Asia recently after China was seriously hit.

The virus has high survival rate that even if carried through frozen meat, it can stay alive in 1,000 days. It takes long to contain the highly contagious virus.

Biosecurity measures will be enforced in all Bohol ports and the Panglao airport in tight coordination with proper authorities and shipping and airline companies.

This afternoon’s coordination meeting was also attended by port, airport, shipping and airline officials/representatives.

Bohol inbound passengers through the ports and the airport will be properly informed that the province is observing a strict quarantine policy against all entering pork and related products.

Any such products carried will be disposed of in designated disposal/confiscation bins as the passengers exit from plane or ship.

Lapiz said they already installed initial two disposal bins at the airport and will put the same at the different ports in the province.

ASF advisory printed in English, Chinese and Korean will be attached to the ship tickets, including those who will travel from Cebu to Bohol.

Yap already called Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia for at least synchronized inter-island port bio-security measures.

There is no African swine fever case in Bohol yet and even the Department of Agriculture yet refused to confirm or deny if the high pig mortality in Luzon now could have been caused by the virus.

But Bohol has to enforce proactive measure, according to the provincial veterinarian.

AVOID FEEDING WITH SWILL

Households raising pigs in their backyards are advised not to feed their hogs with swill, particularly those from restaurants.

According to Lapiz, the temporary ban on the entry to Bohol of live pigs, pork and pork-related products cannot affect the province’s pork self-sufficiency.

Bohol has 430% pork self-sufficiency and it even “exports” pork to other provinces.

But once the ASF virus is proven already in the country, it may also find victims in Bohol swine and infection can become catastrophic to the hog industry.

“Dunay mga butakal nga ibyahe nganhi sa Bohol para pasanay kay maayong klase, ug bisan gani frozen nga semilya sa butakal,” the provincial veterinarian said.

Lapiz said it cannot always be known if a vector of the virus comes in an unguarded time and so it pays to be on alert, full alert against its entry.
