The successful implementation of environment programs in the province has prompted an American-assisted project to give a rare “Learning Destination for Good Environmental Governance†award to Bohol during the latter’s 157th Foundation Day last July 22.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)’s U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)- funded Eco-Governance Project gave Bohol Governor Edgar Chatto a plaque of distinction in recognition of the exemplary environmental programs adopted by several towns in Bohol.
Representing USAID, May Segura-Ybanez, cited programs implemented by such Bohol towns as Talibon, Jagna and Duero with a high degree of success worth replicating by other local government units (LGUs) willing to learn solid waste management, coastal resource management, and management of fisheries, and forests and forestlands as those which were started in Talibon and San Miguel municipalities.
Ten towns in Bohol benefited from the Eco-Governance Project, with local provincial government and municipal governments committed financial counterpart funds excluding personal commitments, Eco-Governance sources said.
The Eco-Governance team worked with the Talibon LGU in analyzing its Participatory Coastal Resources Assessment (PCRA) data, including a preliminary assessment of the state of its existing marine protected areas.
The project also included negotiations with LGUs near Talibon for the delineation of their municipal waters even as Talibon undertook coastal resource management projects which included the management and protection of Danajon Bank.
