Multi-million Projects in Bohol
« on: December 07, 2011, 07:39:30 AM »
By Bohol Chronicle

The Regional Development Council approved proposal to conduct separate feasibility studies of two muli-million-peso projects of Bohol during the full council meeting here on Monday last week as presided by co-chair Argeo Melisimo.

RDC chair, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama was in Manila then.

RDC meeting held here on Nov. 28, 2011 unanimously approved the move to conduct the feasibility study of the P7-billion Bohol Northeastern Basin Multipurpose Dam proposed by the National Irrigation Administration-7 with the support of Rep. Erico Aumentado, and pre-feasibility study of the establishment of Bohol Northwest Special Economic Zone (SEZ) as proposed by the Provincial Development Council chaired by Gov. Edgar Chatto.

Aumentado's motion for approval of his pet project was amended by Gov. Edgar Chatto to include the SEZ prior to the nod of the RDC during the same gathering.

Following the move (approval), the two different projects are to be favorably endorsed to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) for consideration.

The first (irrigation project) to be located in barangay Concepcion, Danao town deals with the construction of multipurpose irrigation dam that carries with it the (electric) power generation while the second (SEZ) to be situated at the contiguous towns of Maribojoc, Loon, Calape and Tuigon.

The multipurpose irrigation dam has earned endorsement by Chatto-led executive committee of the provincial Development Council (PDC) after the provincial leaders conducted PDC meeting and ocular inspection of the project site earlier.

SEZ on the hand, is an "integrated complex of an international cruise ship port, a transport bulk terminal and container yard and other medium-and-large-scale port related industries."

Like its predecessors--the multi-billion-peso Malinao Dam in Pilar town and the Bayongan Dam, San Miguel town --- the multipurpose irri dam aims to provide reliable water supply and sustain rice sufficiency and eventually increase the electric demand in the province soon despite some oppositions against building another huge dam as raised by some farmers and sectors.

Municipal Mayors Dr. Eutiquio Bernales of Ubay, Ton Gonzaga of Danao and Jacinto Naraga of San Isidro reportedly have expressed support and welcomed the irrigation project.

The proposed multipurpose irrigation dam project is expected to irrigate more than 19,000 hectares of rice farmlands benefiting some 21,000 farmers. The said irrigation project relies mainly on more than 50 sq. km. Inabanga-Wahig river and watershed. It may be able to store some 78.5 million cubic metre of water and produce between 10-20 megawatts power generation.
