Investors on information, communication technology may find obstacle in their interest to put up business here with the lack of vital support facilities in the locality.
Emmanuel D. Cortero, Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) development officer said Bohol and Tagbilaran City in particular, can qualify for the establishment of an economic zone but there must be put in place first facilities like fiber optic connectivity and stable power supply that would ensure efficiency of these technologies.
PEZA zones are established in areas with business potentials and offer investors many incentives like tax holidays in their first five years of operations, exemptions in tariffs and import fees and many others.
Cortero said PEZA have received initial proposals of establishing a call center here by a big company and their office is ready to assist them for eco-zone recognition.
The big Alturas Group of Companies is ready to provide 2,000 square meter area at the Island City Mall for such call center and IT companies are showing interest in this venture.
“Unless communication facilities comparable to other cities like Cebu are put up here, these call center business won’t be ready yet,†Cortero said.
The prospects are getting brighter, however, with the report that the Philippine Long Distance Company is ready to connect fiber optic lines here.
TransCo, a power distribution subsidiary of Napocor is also studying the viability of putting up another 100MW station here to supply the additional power needs in anticipation to the rising demands when the proposed Panglao, Bohol International Airport goes operational. -
