The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) intends to maximize this year’s 60th anniversary celebration to boost the effort in balancing fish production and resource conservation with the Nationwide Fish Conservation Week on the third week this month as the latest activity to spur awareness on the significance of the local fish production.
Other major events scheduled this month in line with the Nationwide Fish Conservation Week are the AgriLink/Foodlink/Aqualink 2007; Voices for the Sea Concert, a benefit-concert which aims to raise funds for the Bantay-Dagat volunteers and for the awareness campaign for sustainable water management and conservation measures.
There will also be a presentation of the “Fishes of the Oceanâ€, the longest painting session on continuous canvas for Guinness’ official recognition.
BFAR’s anniversary celebration carries the theme, “Exploring new frontiers…balancing fish production and resource conservation.
For the upcoming event, Tilapia Central Hatchery of Clarin Project Manager Candido Samijon had earlier expressed support by showcasing the success story of his Tilapia farm in Caluasan, Clarin.
Samijon had coordinated with Ubay Brackish Water Fish Farm (UBWFF) Production Chief Antonio Pillotes, also, to showcase the Aquasilvi Culture Project in the UBWFF compound in Sitio Son-oc, Poblacion, Ubay.
UBWFF’s Aquasilvi Culture Project grows Genetically Enhanced Tilapia (Get Excel) in the two eight-hectare ponds in the UBWFF compound.
In maintaining the Aquasilvi Culture Project, Pillotes is assisted by the project administrator, Roselle Hilot; finance officer, Francisca Aratan; and planning officer, Gloria Olavides with the support of BFAR-Fisheries Extension and Training Division Chief Tiburcio Donaire, BFAR-Ubay Chief Dionisio Colantro, and BFAR-Bohol Provincial Chief Chris Pahamutang.
BFAR started as Bureau of Fisheries (BOF) in July 1, 1947 by virtue of Republic Act 177 and became the Philippine Fisheries Commission in 1963 through RA 3512, then was reverted back as BOF in 1974.
“In 1984, it was reduced into a staff bureau with all its regional offices integrated with the Department of Agriculture (DA). In 1998, RA 8550 or the Philippine Fisheries Code called for the strengthening of the bureau, among others. BFAR regained its line functions as well as its regional offices together with the national and regional technology centers,†according to BFAR records.
