DOLE-Bohol regulates wearing of high heels in workplaces
TAGBILARAN CITY - The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is now disallowing the mandatory use of high heeled shoes among women in workplaces.
This is in compliance to the order that took effect on September 11, 2017 nationwide covering women who are required to wear high heels in their places of work.
DOLE Bohol Field Office has issued a directive against the mandatory wearing of high heeled shoes in the workplace, particularly for sales ladies working in malls and other large retail outlets in Tagbilaran City.
According to DOLE Bohol Field Officer Emmanuel Ferrer, the department called on local business owners to comply with the order.
The new policy pertains to shoes with heels that are over an inch in length, said Ferrer.
Employees required to stand for long periods of time are also allowed to take 15-minute “sitting breaks†every two hours.
Employers are also directed to provide employees with accessible seats where they can perform their duties without detriment or without affecting the efficiency of their jobs.
Based on a study conducted by the Bureau of Working Conditions, prolonged standing leads to several health issues, particularly when wearing high heels.
Ferrer noted that since the directive’s implementation, business establishments, including malls, have started complying with the order.
DOLE Regional Offices are tasked to inspect and monitor the implementation of the said order.
Article 168 of the Labor Code and Rules 1000 and 1960 of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Standards mandates the labor department to formulate policies and implement programs to ensure the safety and welfare of workers in workplaces. (ecb/PIA7-Bohol)
