Community-based Early Warning Systems

After conducting a hazard mapping in the province, the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) and the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) have scheduled a series of seminar-workshops on the community-based early warning systems (CBEWS) for the 47 municipalities and the capital city of Bohol.

The OCD and NDCC will present the results of the hazard mapping and the status of CBEWS established in the province to the local government units (LGUs), from the provincial government to the barangay level, during the series of seminars scheduled on February 4 to 13.

This was according to OCD Administrator and NDCC Executive Officer Glenn Rabonza in his letter to Governor Erico Aumentado dated January 11, 2008.

PHIVOLCS has been tasked to spearhead the information, education and communication (IEC) campaigns on CBEWS.

The activity is part of the multi-agency project called Hazards Mapping and Assessment for Effective Community-based Disaster Risk Management (READY) project supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) supports

Agencies involved are the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA), Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA), and Office of the Civil Defense (OCD).

The project components include multi-hazard mapping, establishment of community-based early warning systems (CBEWS) and information, education and communication (IEC) campaigns, Rabonza explained.
