Ideas and possibilities flowed during Gov. Erico Aumentado's recent eco-tourism benchmarking trip to
Hawaii.
The trip with businessman Norris Oculam, immediate past president of the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and First Lady Peregrina Aumentado brought them to the beach row of the renowned Waikiki Beach and gave them the opportunity to tour tourist interests including the ultramodern Polynesian Cultural Center.
The governor emphasized that his trip was sponsored, so that like his previous foreign travels, the provincial government did not spend a single centavo for the same.
In Hawaii, Aumentado met with a top and trend-setting architect whose firm has so far done at least 235 projects in six continents. He counts Boracay in the Philippines, Africa and even conservative Italy among his clients.
His advocacy is to blend - and not to clash with the environment, and weave in - not contrast with or stand out from the surroundings liike a sore thumb. His works include the extraordinary: an undersea room with glass walls and ceiling that offers the occupants a full panoramic view of the world underneath the sea, with sea creatures for company on a 24-hour basis.
The exposure brought forth a gush of ideas and the concept of a tourist township - not just a stand-alone hotel or resort - for Aumentado who, as head of the Panglao Island Tourism Development Task Force, may introduce and implement it in the future aeropolis of the Panglao Bohol International Airport Development Project, and elsewhere in the province.
The trip also gave the governor the opportunity to meet with Dr. Bradley Wong who is heading a medical mission to Bohol in November this year, and the key officials of the Aloha Medical Mission (AMM) including its president, Antonio Tan and past president Ramon Sy.
AMM is an organization of volunteers whose passion is to conduct life-changing operations and services to the medically underserved in the Philippines, Southeast Asia and the Pacific. It was founded in 1983 by members of the Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii to provide free and voluntary medical, surgical, and other health-related services, supplies, and equipment to medically indigent areas.
Aside from the Philippines and Hawaii where they have set up the AMM Clinic, the volunteers have conducted missions in Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Micronesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Marshall Islands and Vanuatu. - the Bohol Chronicle
