TAGBILARAN CITY—Even as local businessmen who display tarsiers for tourist viewing lobby for the scrapping of a provincial ordinance that bans the commercialization of the endangered species, an international wildlife foundation is lauding Bohol lawmakers for their landmark legislation.
The Born Free Foundation, an international wildlife charity group based in the United Kingdom, thanked the provincial board for introducing the ordinance that prohibits the display of tarsiers outside their natural habitat.
In a letter to Board Members Alfonso Damalerio II and Esther Corazon Galbreath, BFF senior scientific researcher Chris Draper said the ordinance was not only “forward thinking†but also “a compassionate decision.â€
“The Philippines can be justifiably proud of this legislation, and it is our hope that other regions and countries may look to your example when considering similar legislation,†Draper said.
The foundation is working all over the world to stop the sufferings of wild animals to protect threatened species in the wild.
In a visit to Bohol in January, a crew of British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) featured the tarsiers in a documentary that will be shown all over the world.
The crew, headed by British TV presenter and author Simon Reeve, highlighted the need for rescue and care of the endangered species that are caged and displayed outside their natural habitat.
Gov. Erico Aumentado has yet to sign the measure
