Bohol Vice Governor Julius Caesar Herrera said Boholanos could meet some of their needs if they start right in their own backyard.
“We do not have to go far but we can start planting in the vacant spaces in the areas around the house,†Herrera noted.
The vice-governor pointed out that many people go to the store even for kamunggay.
“You do not have to buy that because you can always plant kamunggay right in your own backyard,†he added.
Herrera said the people can save a little if they raise their own plants and no longer have to buy from the store when the need arises.
He added that in other places where there are very few empty spaces, people plant tomatoes on pots which they put on their window sill.
“Here, we still have vacant spaces that we can use for plants that we use for our basic needs,†he bared.
Herrera, who chairs the Sangguniang Panlalawigan committee on agriculture, said there is no doubt about the potential of Bohol as an agricultural province.
He however stressed that there is no need to wait for big companies to start agri-business ventures.
Herrera urged people to start utilizing the empty spaces around their house for plants.
He said it is sad that while there are many idle lands in the province, people are complaining because they cannot make ends meet.
“Since every peso counts, we can save a lot if we do not have to buy the ones that we can plant,†he added.
At the same time however, the vice-governor declared that there are plans to engage in other agricultural ventures that will benefit more people.
Herrera has thrown his support behind such ventures as mango and banana and other cash crops that have increasingly attracted the attention of farmers.
