Bohol Anti-Rabbies Campaign
« on: November 13, 2007, 05:13:22 PM »
By Rey Anthony Chiu

Putting up the heat on the provincial anti-rabies campaign, which has not gotten off from its shrill bark, Vice Governor Julius Caesar Herrera appealed to Bohol mayors to actively join in the campaign to totally eradicate rabies threat here.

Speaking as guest during the recent out of town meeting of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) hosted by Catigbian, Herrera said Bohol has risen itself as the top province in the country threatened by dog bites. He said to date, about 7 have died in 2007 while hundreds have been bitten and needs proper attention. This, he said has drained the provincial funds, which may be used for other development purposes.

Herrera stressed that Bohol has already approved the ordinance it still has not gone off because of failure of town executives to execute the law.

Rising to the occasion, he personally appealed to the 27 of Bohol’s 47 town executives present to cooperate with the provincial authorities to tame the rabies threat here.

“Kung mahadlok mo mo-execute, dili mo angayan nga mamayor,” he said as he emphasized the urgency of adopting the provincial program. (If you have apprehensions on executing the law, then you do not deserve to be mayors)

Herrera steered the Sangguniang Panlalawigan into crafting the P16M anti-rabies campaign to once and for all chase the rabies threat from Bohol.

Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Stella Marie Lapiz has explored the possibility of putting up a reinvigorated program that not only allocates funds for the purchase of human rabies vaccines, but also goes for the massive rabies vaccination program for the entire province.

The program incorporates crafting of program implementation guidelines, a massive localization approach adoption, dog population control measures and massive vaccination. It also sees reduction of dog-to-dog and dog to man contact as imperative, making sure that strict surveillance and quarantine at ports of entry would become an institution in Bohol.
