Bohol Poverty Reduction Management Office (BPRMO) Head Antonieto "Boy" Pernia challenges the officials of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) to take the lead in the campaign against the spread of dengue which death toll already reaching hundreds, mostly children.
"SK officials should not just sit at the Sangguniang Panglunsod or Sangguniang Bayan, and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and do nothing", Pernia said. The BPRMO head challenged SK to come up with a stand or concrete program to address the dengue outbreak in the local scene.
Pernia came up with the statement after attending a seminar on population, health and environment recently wherein a case study in a big barangay in Paranaque City proved that the youth members of SK failed to participate in solving the waste disposal which resulted to worm infestation of the residents.
While that barangay faced problem on worm infestation, Bohol is facing the dreaded dengue outbreak.
Around 17,000 people used to cramped in the barangay where households do not have toilets, uncollected garbage scatter in all corners, and just light rain could cause a flood.
That was before the residents realized the value of volunteerism and address the waste disposal problem.
"Now, it's one of the cleanest barangay in Metro Manila today, even winning second prize in the search for cleanest barangays," Pernia said.
From that case study, Pernia noted that SK was never involved until everything was in place- -the youth were already organized and the barangay was already in order.
On this, Pernia raised the question if SK is really significant and is functioning.(AV-PGMA)
