Agri sector generates 2.15M jobs
« on: September 02, 2009, 01:43:01 AM »
Philippine agriculture generated a total of 2.18 million jobs from 2005 up to the first quarter of 2009 as farm productivity expanded by an annual average of 3.9%.

According to DA Secretary Arthur Yap, the agriculture sector, which accounts for a third of the labor force, generated 96,616 jobs in the first quarter of 2009 alone.

This came as President Arroyo orders to the Department of Agriculture to speed up the implementation of FIELDS that has contributed to the 2.1% growth rate in agriculture sector.

FIELDS, enumerates the government’s food security and sufficiency agenda, through Fertilizers, Irrigation and other rural infrastructure like farm-to-market roads (FMRs), Extension services and education for farmers, Loans, Dryers and other post harvest facilities, and Seeds and other genetic materials.

Yap said that over the 2005-2008 period, 2.09 million jobs were also generated under the Convergence Initiative, which is a tri-agency program comprising the DA along with the Departments of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The DA secretary remains optimistic of steady and further growth of jobs inspite of the threats of El Niño and La Niña, high cost of fertilizers and typhoons.
