Winning the search in region 7, Garcia Hernandez now hopes to make it big as it competes for the country's best programs in Alternative Learning Systems (ALS).
ALS is a government initiative through the Department of Education to allow the country's out-of school youth to obtain certifications from the formal school despite their not being regularly enrolled in established institutions.
This would also offer a second chance literacy program for the marginalized who have been deprived of formal scholastic training due to inability and sheer effort to be in gainful occupation first rather than the schools, sources said.
Here in Garcia Hernandez, the administration of Mayor Myrna Schreurs gave a high priority for the ALS in attempts to peg a higher literacy rate for the town, admitted Cerina Cadenas, the municipal public information officer.
The move seemingly worked fine with the town winning the regional competitions for best programs.
Last week, a national evaluation team finished their validation of the local programs, this as Garcia Hernandez hosted the panel from Manila coming over to see for themselves how the town does the job, the town public information officer said.
According to Cadenas, the Manila based evaluators interviewed members of the Municipal Literacy Coordinating Council, as regards the ALS innovative programs and activities that the town leaders implemented here.
Moreover, she said the panel of evaluators also visited schools and barangays where the ALS is implemented to validate the interview data.
