MANILA, Philippines - Singer and songwriter Arnel Pineda, born in Sampaloc, Manila, not only lived his dream of singing with his favorite American rock band, Journey, but also claimed acceptance from one of the music industryâ€™s critics.

â€œMr. Pineda, who sings hard and with the appropriate vulnerability, gives it some distinction," said Ben Ratliff a noted critic who writes for the New York Times.

â€œBeyond that, the band seems to have taken rock vitamins: it feels alive," he added.

Ratliff reviewed Journeyâ€™s newest album, â€œRevelation"â€” with 11 new songs, 11 old songs and a live DVDâ€”the band's first record with their new anointed front man.

Journey emerged from the late 1970â€™s with raspy-voiced tenor, Steve Perry as the bandâ€™s best-known lead singer. The band spawned a series of hits that include â€œDonâ€™t Stop Believing," â€œFaithfully," â€œSeparate Ways," and â€œOpen Arms."

After Perry left in the late 1980s, there were a couple of replacements --- Jeff Scott Soto who was reportedly fired after a brief stint and Steve Augeri who dropped out in 2006 after eight years with the band due to voice problems.

Enter Pineda early this year, a 40-year-old former engineering student, who did stints in various pubs in Quezon City, Makati, Manila, Olongapo and Hong Kong.

Lead guitarist, Neal Schon discovered Pineda on YouTube when the boyish-looking, shoulder-length haired singer did a cover of â€œFaithfully" with his band, â€˜Zoo.â€™

â€œRecently, Mr. Schon secured the services of another singer, Arnel Pineda, a 40-year-old from the Philippines whom he found on YouTube and who sounds a great deal like Mr. Perry," Ratliff said.

There was a resurgence of interest on Journey after its song, â€œDonâ€™t Stop Believing" closed last yearâ€™s final episode of the hit HBO series, â€œThe Sopranos."

Although he sounds very much like Perry, Journey fans have been pessimistic about Pinedaâ€™s introduction to the band, some even hitting his ethnicity.

Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain in an interview however said that he actually liked the idea of Pineda joining them since now they are not just an American band but also a â€œworld band."

â€œWe are international now. We are not about one color. I kind of like the whole idea of having a singer like him. Itâ€™s exotic," Cain said.

Hi Ginger! Two days ago, me and banana heard him on FM station in Sacramento. We thought it was Steve Perry until the DJ said something like "Arnel Pineda from the Philippines".

I went out with my husband and my mother-in-law last night for a late Mother's day celebration and Arnel Pineda was our topic. They're so impressed how he sounds really good like Steve Perry.

I can't wait to buy his CD and DVD. I'm his fan now.

And by the way, "Open Arms" is my national anthem song from Journey.

Poooooon! OMG! i cantt really get over how people really missed Journey and how people became so happy to hear Steve Perry through Arnel Pineda! Yes, i heard it in our FM stations here nga Arnel Pineda really was doing very good in doing Steve's Part and how the group accepted him part of the group. Pon they are selling their cd with their tour video as pakapin daw at $11 bucks naa sa Wallmart!

Go Arnel! Go Pinoy singers! Be Humble and be patient for one day you'll be discovered!!!!

Oh my, nakahilak pod ko oi! Ano ba yan!

Time pa, I always thought Arnel Pineda is somebody else. Di ba naa toy Arnel Pineda na syuyot na host ug singing contest or something? I am confused! But this Arnel guy is really, really good and he is so humble. He'll go far if he keeps his feet grounded. Way to go, Arnel! You are making your mother smile with tears in heaven now!
