Trouble, Leona Helmsley’s Millionaire Dog, Dies

Definitely the richest, and most likely the most hated dog in the world is dead. Hotel and real estate mogul Leona Helmsley’s pampered Maltese, Trouble, has passed away at the ripe old age of 12 (or 84, depending on who you ask).

The (pretty cute) little pup became world famous when it was bequeathed 12 millions dollars in Leona Helmsley’s will. Helmsley, known as “The Queen of Mean,” died in 2007 of congestive heart failure. After her death, a judge was able to reduce the 12 million dollars to 2 million. For the last few years, the dog has been cared for by Carl Lekic, the manager of Helmsley’s Sandcastle hotel in Florida.

What the hell does a dog do with millions of dollars? Well, for one it pays for protection. Trouble spent $100,000 a year on a full-time security guard – one hired based on the multitude of death threats directed at the canine. I guess some people don’t take too kindly to exorbitantly rich animals. Other reported costs were $1,200 a year for food and $8,000 a year for grooming.

Although the news is just being confirmed today, Trouble apparently died last year on December 13th. Helmsley wanted the dog to be buried with her in the family mausoleum – but no dice. Trouble was cremated, as it’s against regulations to house pets in a human cemetery.

“You cannot bury pets in a cemetery,” said Stephen Byelick, a member of the Sleep Hollow Cemetery’s board. “The same rules apply to mausoleums.”

Well, if in fact all dogs do go to heaven, the two may be reunited in paradise. But then again, maybe not as I’m sure some would debate which side of the coin Leona Helmsley fell upon. -- http://www.webpronews.com/

Death Threats Drive Heiress Dog Into Hiding
Helmsley's $12M pooch flees to undisclosed location in Fla.

(Newser) – When the Queen of Mean left her pampered pooch $12 million, it only spelled trouble for Trouble. Leona Helmsley's spoiled Maltese, whose annual upkeep bills run to $300,000, was forced to flee her Connecticut estate after a flood of death and abduction threats by blackmailers hungry for the dog’s moolah, the London Times reports.

“We were alarmed by the number of threats—20 to 30,” said a Helmsley aide. The Maltese was flown to an undisclosed location under an assumed name—“Bauble”—and is reportedly frolicking under the protection of its security team. -- http://www.newser.com/

leona hemsley is not alone.

Estates going to the dogs

by MONICA LAGANPARSAD

While cash-strapped Zimbabweans and South Africans may consider pet-owners who include dogs in their wills as barking mad, a growing number of animal-lovers are leaving their entire fortunes to their loyal pets.

Some of the pampered pets are even sole beneficiaries of trusts which include cars, houses and even jewellery.

Lawyers this week said the bizarre gesture was no longer unusual in South Africa.

For jealous and stunned humans, this provokes the question: what on earth do they spend it on?  But the evidence does suggest they have no difficulty spending the money or enjoying their new home comforts.

The canines, according to one lawyer, don't splash out on doggy bling but rather everyday essentials.

In KwaZulu-Natal, an elderly spinster left a large amount of cash and her upmarket Durban North home to her dog.  Her two elderly domestic workers were allowed to live rent-free to care for the dog.

According to the will, upon the death of the dog and two care-givers, the house and remaining cash will be donated to a charity foundation.

"The house is fairly large and it's one of the older houses in the (upmarket) neighbourhood ... but I don't want to give too much detail otherwise it will be easily recognised," said Sean O'Hagan, a Johannesburg-based lawyer.

Another pet with a huge windfall is a parrot, who stands to inherit a house in Cape Town.  The lawyer who is busy drafting the will said his client was not willing to comment or disclose any details about it.

In Durban, a lawyer said his client had left R50000 in a trust for the care of his cat.

Perhaps the most celebrated inheritance case in South Africa is that of Kalu, the chimpanzee.  Kalu was expected to inherit a staggering $40-million fortune when his owner, Patricia Cavendish O'Neill, died.  O'Neill, the last of a long line of aristocrats, drew up a will in 1999 leaving her fortune and sanctuary, Broadlands in Western Cape's Somerset West, to Kalu. A portion of her wealth was also to be shared among other animals which had been adopted and placed in her sanctuary.

In an interview with MNet's Carte Blanche in 2003, she said: "The money has been put in a trust, called the Kalu Animal Trust.  There are 32 baboons, 65 dogs and 14 cats to look after as well as Kalu.

"In the trust I've left the farm to the chimpanzee.  Basically it is called the Kalu Animal Trust," she said.

O'Neill, who once bought an entire stock of live crayfish at a restaurant in the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town so she could release them into the ocean, was so concerned about her animals that she wanted to keep the sanctuary going at all costs. "What happens when I die? What's going to happen to all my beloved animals?  I am with them every day.  My baboons, I bring them up like babies, nappies and three-hour feeds, they are all like my children," the author told Carte Blanche.

In the US and UK, this unusual gesture no longer raises eyebrows.

Miami heiress Gail Posner, who died in March, left a $3-million trust fund and an $8.3-million mansion to her Chihuahuas, Conchita, Lucia and April Marie.

According to the Wall Street Journal, seven of her bodyguards, housekeepers and other personal aides were also left a total of $26-million under her will, and some were allowed to live in the mansion to care for the dogs.

However, Posner's son, Brett Carr, who was left a paltry $1-million in comparison, is now disputing the will and suing Posner's personal aides, whom he claims took advantage of his mother and changed her will.

It has also been reported in the US that billionaire talk-show host Oprah Winfrey has a posh contingency plan for her pooches: $30-million has reportedly been allocated in her will to care for her dogs after her death.

Durban-based lawyers this week said the motive for a growing number of people including their pets into their wills was to ensure that the pet in question is looked after.  The wills also identify someone to administer the estate on the animal's behalf.

The pets also don't squabble over their owner's estate.

ha, ha, ha! literally....

with that much money she gave to ONE dog, she could have rescued thousands of animals destined to euthanasia in the hundreds of animal care and control centers around the country.

2 million dollars could have fed thousands of dying, wounded, animals. 2 million dollars could have sustained hundreds of animal rescue centers on the verge of closure....
