Amy Winehouse, 27, found dead at her London flat

London Ambulance Service found singer at 3.54pm but unable to save her life
Police treated death as 'unexplained'

Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her home in London, it has been reported.

The Back To Black singer was apparently found at the property in by emergency services at 3.54pm this afternoon, according to sources, and her death is being treated as 'unexplained' by police.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: 'Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.

Picture of health: Amy was spotted out
and about in London earlier this month

'On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.

'Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.’

It is not known whether Amy’s father Mitch actually knows about his daughter’s death and Sky News have confirmed that he is currently on a plane to New York to take part in a Jazz festival.

Winehouse had been seen with her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield earlier this week as the teenager took to the stage at the iTunes festival.

She refused to join in for Mama Said, but did support the 14-year-old with a few dance moves before urging the crowd to buy Dionne's new album Good For The Soul.

A source said: 'Amy staggered onstage and grabbed the mic to beg the crowd to buy her protege’s new album.'

Winehouse's appearance at the concert came after she cancelled her European tour following a disastrous performance in June when she stumbled onto the stage in Belgrade and gave an incoherent performance appearing very disorientated and removed from reality.

Following the concert which saw fans enraged and the subsequent video that circulated to millions she cancelled the remaining dates of her European tour.

A statement released by the troubled singer's spokesperson said that the singer would be given 'as long as it takes' to recover.

Daddy's girl: Amy was very close to her father Mitch, who is believed not to know about his daughter's death

The statement read: 'Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances.

'Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen.'

Winehouse had been working on her long-awaited new album, the follow-up to her 2006 breakthrough multi-million selling Back To Black, for the past three years.

Singing sensation: Amy had huge hits with tracks including Rehab and Back To Black
and is seen here performing at Glastonbury in 2008

Winehouse has had a troubled life which has included various stints in rehab for drug and alcohol addiction.

In an interview in 2008, her mother Janis said she would be unsurprised if her daughter died before her time.

She said: 'I've known for a long time that my daughter has problems. But seeing it on screen rammed it home. I realise my daughter could be dead within the year. We're watching her kill herself, slowly.

'I've already come to terms with her dead. I've steeled myself to ask her what ground she wants to be buried in, which cemetery. Because the drugs will get her if she stays on this road.

'I look at Heath Ledger and Britney. She's on their path. It's like watching a car crash - this person throwing all these gifts away.'

Amy Winehouse's Beehive Hairdo Was Developed In Chicago In 1960
Posted Tue Jul 26, 2011 9:51am PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr.

Amy Winehouse wholly embraced her love for the '60s, and it wasn't apparent just in her music, which channeled the throwback sound of girl groups like the Ronettes. The "Rehab" singer, who was found dead in her London home Saturday and was buried Tuesday, also adopted a signature hairstyle made popular during that era--the beehive.

When Winehouse was introduced to U.S. audiences in 2006 when promoting her sophomore album "Back To Black," her hairdo was a distinctive part of her image.

Winehouse's poufy mane which stood no less than 5 inches tall, so closely resembled that of lead Ronette singer Ronnie Spector that the veteran performer thought she was looking at a photo of her younger self when she saw a picture of Winehouse in the New York Post.

"I don't know her, I never met her, and when I saw that pic, I thought, 'That's me!' But then I found out, no, it's Amy. I didn't have on my glasses," Spector told the Village Voice.

The hairstyle made its debut in 1960, and was conceived by Margaret Vinci Heldt, then a stylist for the Chicago-based Modern Beauty Shop magazine. Inspired to showcase something different for the February 1960 issue, Heldt conceptualized the new hair design.

excerpts from:

Amy Winehouse: Reflections from Two Drug Policy Activists

by Tony Newman and Meghan Ralston
7/27/11 08:22 AM ET

There's an Overdose Crisis in the United States and Abroad.

People usually hear about overdose when it happens to a celebrity like Heath Ledger or Chris Farley.  Yet overdose is a silent killer that has quickly become one of the leading causes of accidental death in the United States.  Nationally, over 27,000 people died from accidental overdoses in 2007 (the most recent data available).  In NY and 16 other states, overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death, even passing car fatalities.  More Americans now die from an accidental drug overdose than from HIV/AIDS.

***

Addiction Doesn't Discriminate.

Drug misuse and addiction don't discriminate.  Addiction can take over and ruin anyone's life, whether you are a Grammy award-winning artist or someone who sings for money on the subway.  Betty Ford, Rush Limbaugh and Patrick Kennedy all remind us that addiction can touch anyone, rich or poor, left or right, famous or unknown.

People Use Drugs for Pleasure -- and to Cope with Pain.

We don't know the reasons why Amy Winehouse used drugs, or what triggered her last binge.  Some reports talk about a big fight with her boyfriend after he found out she was still in touch with her ex-husband who is behind bars.  Other coverage describes the booing and panning that she recently endured at a recent concert in Serbia, where she was unable to perform.  But what we do know is that people use drugs for both joy and for pain.  We're sure that Amy, like so many of us, had a lot of good times when partying.  On the flip side, Amy appeared to have some demons and pain that she was trying to soothe by self-medicating with drugs.

We Must End the Stigma Against People Addicted to Drugs.

We must -- and this is perhaps most important of all -- stop our barbaric stigmatization and stereotypes of people addicted to drugs.  People like Amy endure a hell we can only imagine.  The agony of being made into a ridiculous caricature, something less than human, for nothing more than our own casual amusement, is beyond what any young person should ever be forced to endure.  We targeted her, mocked her and cast her out as an irredeemable "crackhead" for nothing more than sport.  It's shameful. It's too late for Amy to hear us now, but our apologies should be sent out en masse to her and to all others like her, struggling, surviving.
