Netizens react
Fans on the Internet were quick to weigh in on the news.
Some were concerned that Gadot may not the best choice for the role. Some commented that Wonder Woman’s actress should be a tall, athletic-looking woman, since the character is an Amazon warrior. Others drew comparisons between Gadot and actress Lynda Carter, whose portrayal of the superheroine in a television show that ran from 1975 to 1979 remains the gold standard for many fans.
However, others were happy about the news, and were especially excited by the possibility of seeing other DC characters on the big screen as well. Some users also noted that Gadot’s Israeli heritage made her an interesting casting choice.
Comic book creators seemed optimistic about the news. Writer Gail Simone tweeted that she was “cautiously optimistic†about the news, while screenwriter Bryan Lynch said that he loves the casting news and believes that the Batman/Superman movie should be called a “Justice League†movie instead.
Snyder also believes that Gadot, who is a professional sports trainer and has served two years in the Israel Defense Forces, is a good choice for the role.
“Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character,†said Snyder. Gadot joins Affleck and Henry Cavill (Superman) on the film, which is currently in production. — TJD, GMA News
