MANILA, Philippines - Miss Universe-Philippines Shamcey Supsup left for Colombia, Wednesday night, to undergo some final polishing to cap her Miss Universe training. The 25-year old board-topping architect, who graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines, will stay in Bogota, Colombia for ten days before proceeding to Sao Paulo, Brazil where the Miss Universe 2011 pageant will be held.
In a stellar send-off party by Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) at the Topaz Room of Gateway Suites in Araneta Center, Supsup seemed unfazed by the added pressure brought by the amazing fourth place finish by her predecessor Venus Raj.
“When I won in April, I knew that the journey to become the next Filipina Miss Universe would be very challenging, but it will be an endeavour to be enjoyed,†Supsup said in the send-off party.
In a one-on-one interview with philstar.com, Supsup revealed that it took extensive efforts before she was convinced to join Binibining Pilipinas. She mentioned that she was, at first, afraid to join beauty pageants, but the enduring support of her family and friends helped her overcome such fear.
“I was scared. Alam mo 'yung feeling that you don't want to make a mistake, and you don't want to be embarrassed? Since hindi ako into pageants, hindi ako marunong; I did not want to try it. But with the support of my friends, of my family, sila 'yung nagbigay ng force para ako'y mag-start (referring to joining the Binibining Pilipinas pageant). But when it started, ako na mismo ang nag-motivate sa sarili ko to do this and to do that because I have a responsibility.â€
While in the country, Supsup underwent rigid trainings on personality development, language, history, and hair and make-up. Despite said trainings, Supsup maintained that her winning edge would be revealing her true self.
“I'll just be myself. Ganu'n yung nangyari sa Binibini, I was just being myself. I didn’t try to please everyone. I just showed who I really am,†Supsup told philstar.com.
The coronation night for the Miss Universe pageant will take place on September 12 at the Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo.
