It was a storybook marriage in 1986 on a spring weekend on Cape Cod that united a princess of an American political dynasty, Maria Shriver, and the gap-toothed muscle-clad movie star famous enough to be known by one name, Arnold.

In many ways, it was a pairing of opposites: Her uncle was a U.S. president; his father was an Austrian policeman. She was the rising star of a network TV news show; he was the pot-puffing star of "Pumping Iron." He was a Republican with a soft spot for Richard Nixon; her family was a pillar in the nation's Democratic establishment.

Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Shriver announced their separation late Monday, cleaving a sometimes-turbulent 25-year relationship after "a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us," the couple said in a joint statement.

The breakup comes about four months after Schwarzenegger ended a bumpy, two-term run as California governor, a job his wife never wanted him to pursue. Since then, Schwarzenegger, 63, has been fashioning a role as an international advocate for green energy, giving speeches and lining up work in Hollywood. Shriver, 55, has guested-edited an edition of Oprah Winfrey's magazine but also talked about the stress of changing roles after serving as California's first lady.

The joint statement, issued by a spokesman for Schwarzenegger, said the two were working on the future of their relationship while living apart and they would continue to parent their four children together.

"After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion, and prayer, we came to this decision together," the statement said.

It was not clear from the statement if either remained at their gated, canyon estate in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood, or whom the children were with. Schwarzenegger's spokesman, Daniel Ketchell, said he wouldn't answer questions beyond what was said in Monday's statement.

The former governor tweeted frequently during his recent travels to Brazil, Nigeria and France, but Shriver was not mentioned in his online updates from the road. Shriver, also active on social networks, posted three updates on her Twitter page on the day of their 25th wedding anniversary, April 26, but did not mention the milestone.

About a month before the anniversary, Shriver wrote on her Facebook page that she was going through a transition in her life.

"As you know, transitions are not easy. I'd love to get your advice on how you've handled transitions in your own life," she said in a video posted on YouTube.

"It's so stressful to not know what you're doing next. People ask you what are you doing and then they can't believe that you don't know what you're doing," she said.

Schwarzenegger has often said that Shriver, who is keenly attuned to the risks of a life in politics, initially was very upset about his plan to run for governor. But when Schwarzenegger announced his decision on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" in August 2003, he said his wife stood by his decision.

During Schwarzenegger's time in office, Shriver and the couple's children never moved to Sacramento, preferring their secluded estate a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. Schwarzenegger never settled in Sacramento, choosing instead to commute by private jet between his home and the state capitol.

Schwarzenegger and Shriver long presented a gilded partnership that crossed politics, Hollywood and media. They are known for charitable work, and he also founded a committee with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell to encourage road, bridge and other infrastructure development.

Shriver, the daughter of the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, left her job as an NBC News correspondent after Schwarzenegger took office.

In a May 2009 commencement speech at the University of Southern California, Schwarzenegger alluded to the powerful influence Shriver had on his life. He said when people ask him the secret to success, "I say, number one, come to America. Number two, work your butt off. And number three, marry a Kennedy."

As the state's first lady, Shriver ran an annual women's conference that attracted a long list of business, political and entertainment luminaries, along with an audience of thousands. She also was credited with overhauling the California Museum in downtown Sacramento, and, with Schwarzenegger, starting the California Hall of Fame.

In 2007, Shriver said she wouldn't resume a TV news career after the media circus surrounding Anna Nicole Smith's accidental drug overdose.

"It was then that I knew that the TV news business had changed and so had I," she said at the time. In a 2009 interview with The Associated Press, she said "I'm too much of a free spirit" to consider running for elective office.

Shriver stood by her husband during his campaign after the Los Angeles Times reported accusations that he had a history of groping women; Schwarzenegger later said he "behaved badly sometimes."

The breakup comes months after the death of Shriver's father, Peace Corps founder and former vice presidential candidate Sargent Shriver, in January.

Just days after announcing their split, it seems there may be a reconciliation in the future for Maria Shiver and ex California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It appears that after Maria made it clear she was â€œmiserableâ€ in her marriage of 25 years and decided to leave, Arnold has gotten the message loud and clear.

Shriver has been conflicted over whether to divorce Schwarzenegger since 2009, but when her mother died, she stayed with him for support. In 2010, Shriver again decided to leave Arnold, but her father died, causing her again to call off the split. To make matters more difficult for her, since leaving him recently, Arnold has reportedly made some serious changes and is being more engaged in their marriage.

As TMZ reported previously, Schwarzenegger has virtually been an absentee husband and that Shriver is also tired of his multiple infidelities. A lawsuit filed against him in 2004 was later dismissed, but the actor-turned politician has also been accused of groping multiple female journalists and according to Radaronline, engaged in a seven-year affair with former actress Gigi Goyette.

However, now that Schwarzenegger knows his wife means business, heâ€™s been working tirelessly to clean up his act. What speaks volumes of how he treats her, is that the coupleâ€™s four children have pressured her to leave him. Sources tell Tmz that Maria is emotionally â€œterrifiedâ€ of Arnold â€“ and that â€“ coupled with her strong religious views, has made her â€œa shell of a woman.â€

Schwarzenegger said in a statement: â€œI just talked to Maria an hour ago before I came here and we both were saying the same thing, we are amazed and extremely blessed to be surrounded by so many wonderful people.â€

He continued, â€œWe both love each other very much, we are very fortunate we have four extraordinary children and weâ€™re taking it one day at a time.â€

Arnold Schwarzenegger admits to adultery, Twitter erupts with jokes

Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted to The Times on Monday that he fathered a child with a household staffer some 10 years ago. The woman was an employee of the Schwarzeneggers' for 20 years who retired earlier this year.

Once Schwarzenegger stepped down as governor of California in January due to term limits, he broke the news of his love child to his wife, Maria Shriver. The couple acknowledged their separation to The Times earlier this month.

"After leaving the governor's office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago," Schwarzenegger said Monday night in a statement to The Times. "I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry."

Although most of the online ribbing delivered through Twitter and blogs have poked fun at Schwarzenegger through lines he spoke in blockbuster films, one of the most piercing jabs was doled out by comic Fortune Feimster, who spotlighted the former governor's history of vetoing bills that would have supported same-sex marriages.

"Good thing Arnold Schwarzenegger has been upholding the sanctity of marriage since apparently us gay folks don't know how to," Feimster tweeted.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was hit with allegations from six women who said he had wandering hands when he ran for governor of California in 2004.
LOS ANGELES - The "Gropinator" had at least least one fan - his baby-mama maid.

Mildred Baena reportedly boasted that Arnold Schwarzenegger was grabby, the very behavior that nearly doomed his political aspirations.

"Mildred said he had long hands. He would grab her behind often," said Nora Montes, 57, whose daughter was married to Baena's eldest son until 2009, told the Daily News.

"She liked the attention."

Others didn't. When the former movie star was running for governor of California in 2004, he was rocked by allegations from six women who said he had wandering hands.

He denied groping anyone - and wife Maria Shriver stood by him even as he admitted he had "behaved badly sometimes."

That was a whopper of an understatement considering that Schwarzenegger had already sired a love child with Baena, his family's trusted housekeeper.

Shriver was in the dark until Schwarzenegger left the governor's office in January and then confessed to the affair and secret son.

But she had certainly met the child, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the "Conan the Barbarian" muscleman. Montes says Schwarzenegger took his onetime paramour and the kid on at least one family vacation.

The former "Terminator" money-machine has put his Hollywood comeback on hold while the scandal unfolds.

The two-timer's animated "Governator" TV series - in which he was to be an action hero with a double life - bit the dust. He also canceled an appearance at the grand opening of Universal Studios Singapore next week.

"He was not disinvited. He called them on Tuesday to say he did not want to travel to Asia," a source close to him said. "His focus is not on himself. From his standpoint, it's not about him anymore. It's about his family."

Shriver's four kids are said to be rallying around her. Eldest daughter Katherine, 21, reportedly is furious.

"It's tense," an insider told Us magazine. "Everyone feels betrayed and embarrassed that it's out in the open. Not for their dad's sake but for Maria."
