Russell Crowe is Pizut?
« on: June 11, 2011, 03:43:55 AM »
The Oscar-winning actor went on a Tweeting spree hitting out at male circumcision late Thursday night/early Friday morning, making clear his feelings on foreskin and those who would remove it from a newborn baby.

"Circumcision is barbaric and stupid.  Who are you to correct nature?  Is it real that GOD requires a donation of foreskin? Babies are perfect," he said to begin his rant.

After a number of retweets of supportive fans and responses to those critical of his position -- including one in which he said, "Hygenic?  Why don't you sew up your ass then?" -- Crowe reached out to his "Jewish friends," asking them to reject their long tradition of ceremonial circumcision.

Try asking an arabo in the middle of a parched desert in Saudi for the same favour and you will get a firm negative.

Circumcisions: Jewish, Muslim groups oppose ban

Phillip Matier,Andrew Ross, Chronicle Columnist
Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Nothing like a proposed ban on circumcision to bring Jews and Muslims together.

Local chapters of the Jewish Community Relations Council and Anti-Defamation League are teaming up with a couple of practicing Jewish and Muslim families to file a lawsuit demanding that San Francisco's elections director remove the highly publicized circumcision ban from the November ballot.

The lawsuit, which is expected to be filed today in San Francisco Superior Court, argues that circumcision is a common medical procedure regulated by state law - and that it has no business being decided by city voters.

Circumcision versus Lack of Circumcision

Lack of circumcision:

• Is responsible for a 12-fold higher risk of urinary tract infections in infancy. Risk = 1 in 20 to 1 in 50 for uncircumcised infants and 1 in 200 to 1 in 500 for circumcised infants. Higher risk of UTI at older ages as well. Overall lifetime cumulative prevalence of UTI = 1 in 3 for uncircumcised males compared with 1 in 20 for circumcised males, respectively.

• Confers a higher risk of death in the first year of life (from complications of urinary tract infections: namely kidney failure, meningitis and infection of bone marrow).

• One in ~400–900 uncircumcised men will get cancer of the penis, which occurs more than 20 times more commonly in uncircumcised men. A quarter of these will die from it and the rest will require complete or partial penile amputation as a result. (In contrast, invasive penile cancer never occurs or is extraordinarily rare in men circumcised at birth.) (Data from studies in the USA, Denmark and Australia, which are not to be confused with the often quoted, but misleading, annual incidence figure of 1 in 100,000).

• Higher risk of prostate cancer (50–100% higher in uncircumcised men)

• Is associated with 3-fold higher risk of inflammation and infection of the skin of the penis. This includes balanitis (inflammation of the glans), posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin), balanoposthitis (inflammation of glans and foreskin), phimosis (inability to retract the foreskin) and paraphimosis (constriction of the penis by a tight foreskin that will not return after retraction). Up to 18% of uncircumcised boys will develop one of these by 8 years of age, whereas all are unknown or much rarer in the circumcised. Risk of balanoposthitis = 1 in 6. Obstruction to urine flow = 1 in 10–50. Risk of these is even higher in diabetic men.

• Means increased risk of problems that may necessitate 1 in 10 older children and men requiring circumcision later in life, when the cost is 10 times higher, the procedure is less convenient, and the cosmetic result can be lesser, as stitches or tissue glue are required, as compared with circumcisions done in infancy.

• Increases by 2–4 fold the risk of thrush and sexually transmitted infections such as human papillomavirus (HPV), genital herpes (HSV-2), syphilis, chancroid, Trichomonas vaginalis and thrush.

• Is the biggest risk factor for heterosexually-acquired AIDS virus infection in men. 2 to 8-times higher risk by itself, and even higher when lesions from STIs are added in. Risk per exposure = 1 in 300.

• In the female partners of uncircumcised men lack of male circumcision is associated with an up to 5 fold higher incidence of cervical cancer (caused by sexually transmitted HPV), genital herpes, Trichomonas vaginalis, bacterial vaginosis (formerly called “Gardnerella”), and possibly Chlamydia (which is a cause of pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility from blockage of fallopian tubes, and ectopic pregnancy).
Getting circumcised will result in:

• Having to go through a very minor surgical procedure that carries with it small risks.

• Improved hygiene.

• Much lower risk of urinary tract infections.

• Much lower chance of acquiring HIV, the AIDS virus, heterosexually.

• Virtually complete elimination of the risk of invasive penile cancer.

• Slightly lower risk of prostate cancer.

• More favourable hygiene for the man’s sexual partner.

• Much lower risk of cervical cancer and Chlamydia (and thus infertility and other problems) in the female sexual partner.

• More favorable sexual function and experience, with no reduction in sensation during arousal or in the sensitivity of the flaccid penis.

• A penis that is regarded by most men and women as being more attractive.

Circumcision confers a lifetime of medical, health and sexual benefits. At least 1 in 3 uncircumcised males will, over their lifetime, develop a condition requiring medical attention. This means various degrees of suffering and some deaths. In contrast, circumcision can prevent or greatly reduce the risk of most of these medical conditions. The surgical risk of a circumcision in a modern setting is extremely low, while the long-term functional and cosmetic outcomes are generally excellent. Circumcision of the male partner also confers substantial sexual and medical benefits to a woman, by reducing her risk of disease, suffering, medical treatment and premature death.

It is hoped that this review will have proved important informative to medical practitioners and health workers, thereby enhancing the quality of information that they can impart to parents of male children and to adult men. It should also prove to have educational value to others, especially the parents of boys, but also adult men, whether circumcised or not. It is hoped that as a result of reading the information presented herein the choice that has to be made concerning circumcision, especially of infants, will be a much more informed one.

Although there are benefits to be had at any age, they are greater the younger the male. Issues of “informed consent” may be analogous to those parents have to consider for other medical procedures, such as whether or not to immunize their child. The question to be answered is “do the benefits outweigh the risks?” When considering each factor in isolation there could be some difficulty in deciding. However, when viewed as a whole the answer to whether to circumcise a male baby must surely be “YES”. Nevertheless, everybody needs to weigh up all of the pros and cons for themselves and make their own best decision. Hopefully the information provided herein will help in the decision-making process.

Circumcised vs Uncircumcised

Even though over 12,200 circumcisions happen in the UK every year for medical reasons, the operation is something of a mystery to many members of the population and there are a variety of myths surrounding it.

The procedure itself involves removing the foreskin with a scalpel to leave the glans permanently exposed, before the lower edges of remaining skin are then stitched back together and questions are invariably asked about cleanliness and protection from nasty diseases.

Does circumcision mean you’re cleaner? The foreskin protects the glans of the penis and is full of glands which contain oils called smegma that keep the head of the penis moist and lubricated. This smegma is anti-bacterial so it keeps germs at bay so the absence of a foreskin would tend to suggest that hygiene might become a problem. However, as long as you are washing your penis every day, circumcision makes no difference to cleanliness.

Can circumcision reduce your risk of STIs and cancer? The theory is that circumcision slightly reduces your risk of getting penile cancer which is often caused by the wart virus. There is some evidence to show that less circumcised men carry the wart virus than uncircumcised men so there is a reduction in risk but not an absence of it.

Penile cancer is very rare but circumcision as a child does reduce the risk further and circumcised men often have less STIs, but this is no substitute for wearing a condom.

Does circumcision affect sex? After circumcision, the skin covering the glans changes from very delicate and thin to much tougher keratinised skin – like the difference between hands that regularly do housework and those that live a pampered life. This means that the glans of the foreskin becomes less sensitive and, therefore, it can affect the sexual experience for those who have the operation when they are older.

Circumcision in cultures and religions

In some cultures, males must be circumcised shortly after birth, during childhood, or around puberty as part of a rite of passage. Circumcision is commonly practised in the Jewish and Islamic faiths.

Jewish law states that circumcision is a 'mitzva aseh ("positive commandment" to perform an act) and is obligatory for Jewish-born males and for non-circumcised Jewish male converts.  It is only postponed or abrogated in the case of threat to the life or health of the child.  It is usually performed by a mohel on the eighth day after birth in a ceremony called a Brit milah (or Bris milah, colloquially simply bris), which means "Covenant of circumcision" in Hebrew. It is considered of such importance that in some Orthodox communities the body of an uncircumcised Jewish male will sometimes be circumcised before burial.  Although 19th century Reform leaders described it as "barbaric", the practice of circumcision "remained a central rite" and the Union for Reform Judaism has, since 1984, trained and certified over 300 practicing mohels under its "Berit Mila Program". Humanistic Judaism argues that "circumcision is not required for Jewish identity."

In Islam, circumcision is mentioned in some hadith (it is referred as Khitan), but not in the Qur'an.  Some Fiqh scholars state that circumcision is recommended (Sunnah); others that it is obligatory.  Some have quoted the hadith to argue that the requirement of circumcision is based on the covenant with Abraham.  While endorsing circumcision for males, Islamic scholars note that it is not a requirement for converting to Islam.

The Roman Catholic Church formally condemned the ritual observance of circumcision and ordered against its practice in the Ecumenical Council of Basel-Florence in 1442.  The Church presently maintains a neutral stance on circumcision as a medical practice.

Circumcision is customary among the Coptic, Ethiopian, and Eritrean Orthodox Churches, and also some other African churches.  Some Christian churches in South Africa oppose circumcision, viewing it as a pagan ritual, while others, including the Nomiya church in Kenya, require circumcision for membership.  Some Christian churches celebrate the Circumcision of Christ.  The vast majority of Christians do not practice circumcision as a religious requirement.

Prevalence
(or statistics of circumcision)

One-sixth (1/6) to one-third (1/3) - estimates of the proportion of males that are circumcised worldwide

The WHO has estimated that 664,500,000 males aged 15 and over are circumcised (30% global prevalence), with almost 70% of these being Muslim.

Circumcision is most prevalent in the Muslim world, parts of Southeast Asia, Africa, the United States, the Philippines, Israel, and South Korea.

It is relatively rare in Europe, Latin America, parts of Southern Africa, and most of Asia and Oceania.

The overall prevalence of circumcision in the UK is 6% according to the WHO's estimates.

Prevalence is near-universal in the Middle East and Central Asia.

The WHO states that "there is generally little non-religious circumcision in Asia, with the exceptions of the Republic of Korea and the Philippines".

The WHO presents a map of estimated prevalence in which the level is generally low (< 20%) across Europe, and Klavs et al. report findings that "support the notion that the prevalence is low in Europe".

In Latin America, prevalence is universally low.

Estimates for individual countries:

Spain, Colombia and Denmark less than 2%
          Finland 0.006%
          Brazil 7%,
          Taiwan 9%
          Thailand 13%
          Australia 58.7%.

The WHO estimates prevalence in the United States and Canada at 75% and 30%, respectively.

Prevalence in Africa varies from less than 20% in some southern African countries to near universal in North and West Africa.

sorry for the unwitting omission.  (the data are not mine to add to or subtract from or to circumcise, hehe.)  by the way, don't other types of scars result to the opposite of shrink, like, say, those keloids?

Islander, you omit the fact that as with any scarring, the surrounding tissue shrinks  ;D

lol.

ben, you're referring to atrophy. it is also known that the penile foreskin can even prevent the growth of the penis as it can obstruct. one can even argue that by removing the foreskin, one removes the obstruction to growth.

the penile foreskin also contains a mucous membrane, which results in the penis smelling as compared to a circumcised one.

anatomically speaking tho, there are benefits to an uncircumcised penis. the penile foreskin has a greater chance on rubbing on the female's clitoris, which can increase the propensity of her experiencing orgasms. for women who are adept at sexual satisfaction, this can be an asset.

"A few years before the Spaniards subdued the island of Luzon, certain natives of the island of Borneo began to go thither to trade, especially to the settlement of Manila and Tondo; and the inhabitants of the one island intermarried with those of the other. These Borneans are Mahometans [Muslims], and were already introducing their religion among the natives of Luzon, and were giving them instructions, ceremonies, and the form of observing their religion, by means of certain gazizes [kazis, merchants] whom they brought with them. Already a considerable number, and those the chiefest men, were commencing, although by piecemeal, to become Moros, and were being circumcised* and taking the names of Moros. Had the Spaniards' coming been delayed longer, that religion would have spread throughout the island, and even through the others, and it would have been difficult to extirpate it."

- Antonio de Morga, Sucesos de las islas Filipinas (Events in the Philippine Isles), 1609 (quoted in Ask a Filipino, December 23, 2010)

*This custom has not fallen into disuse among the Filipinos, even among the Catholics.

1 patay tungod sa pulong "pisot"
http://www.sunstar.com.ph/
