Mariah Carey has revealed that she thinks of herself as an innocent girl who is 'eternally 12' – despite her sexy image.

The singer says she has never had a one-night stand and considers herself a prude. 'It's a dichotomy. I understand people think I'm a ditzy moron, but I'm Mary Poppins. I'm what the “button-up” girls are supposed to be,' she said.

The singer – who was treated for exhaustion in 2001 after a public meltdown – told US magazine Allure that she still struggles with her confidence.

'I've always had really low self-esteem and I still do. What's weird about that is being on stage, and the love that you get, and the adoration you feel from your real fans. It's hard for a partner to compete – just imagine.' Carey, 37, was divorced from music mogul Tommy Mottola in 1997 after five years of marriage.

She was once linked to Yankees baseball captain Derek Jeter. Known for her curves, she has been showing off a leaner body to promote her latest album, EMC2. She credited her personal trainer for her new figure and dismissed reports she had lost more than two stone.
