LOS ANGELES — Ramiele Malubay, the 20-year-old Filipino American sushi waitress from Miramar, Florida, dreams of becoming the first Asian Idol.Malubay, who made it to the top 24 and survived the first round of eliminations in the top-rated talent show American Idol, disclosed in her “AI” website interview, “I joined ‘American Idol’ not to be famous but to represent the Asian people.”

During the audition process, she mentioned she idolizes former ‘AI’ finalist Jasmine Trias (see separate article on Jasmine Trias) as well as Regine Velasquez, Lani Misalucha, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Tamia, Diana Ross, Spice Girls, Christina Aguilera, Robyn, Lauryn Hill, Minnie Riperton, Mya, Lilly Allen, Natasha Bedingfield, Nina and The Supremes.

The spunky and eloquent Malubay sang Dusty Springfield’s “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” with poise and confidence that she easily won the nods of the three “AI” judges.Randy Jackson said, “You were classy and almost performed like a pro.” Paula Abdul noted, “You are a force to be reckoned with.”

And once a critic of Malubay during the audition in Hollywood, Simon Cowell changed his tone and praised the Filipina singer. He said, “You out sang every single person.”Even Los Angeles Times writer Ann Powers was impressed with Malubay that she commented, “Ramiele Malubay was rightly praised for dusting off Dusty Springfield’s ‘You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me’ with aplomb, and her secret ingredient was a dollop of the elegant cheesiness that typifies Asian pop. Malubay’s serious pipes are fast defeating ‘Idol’s’ anti-brown bias – along with David Archuleta and Danny Noriega, she’s forcing the show’s producers to acknowledge that not every talent comes in black or white.”

The four semifinalists who were eliminated in the first round because they received the fewest votes were Joanne Borgella, Amy Davis, Colton Berry and Garrett Haley.Left to compete aside from Malubay were Kristy Lee Cook, Asia’h Epperson, Alexandrea Lushington, Kady Malloy, Syesha Mercado, Amanda Overmyer, Carly Smithson, Alaina Whitaker and Brooke White among the girls.

The top 10 guys are David Archuleta, Robbie Carrico, Jason Castro, David Cook, Chikezie, David Hernandez, Michael Johns, Luke Menard, Danny Noriega and Jason Yeager.Malubay, who auditioned in Miami, Florida, started singing when she was only 12 and admitted that she has a vocal coach.

In the “AI” site, she mentioned that she slapped her face when she made it to the audition out of disbelief. “I could not believe I made it so I slapped my face,” she said. “When Paula was telling me that I made it I could not believe it. I thought she was just psyching me up or something. I freaked out a little bit but up to now I still cannot believe I am in. I had a plain look on my face while I was walking on the street. Probably one of these days, it will finally hit me,” she disclosed.

She revealed that she usually performed on her cousins’ birthday or in the shower. “But of course, performing onstage is much better than performing in the shower,” she pointed out.The former nursing student said that she is grateful for all the support that her parents have showered her. “They bring me to all the auditions and performances. They take time off from work just to drive me there and gas is not cheap. They bring me shopping for clothes,” she disclosed.

Her father, she added, “even flew to California just to support me and have dinner with me. I know I am no longer a minor so they don’t need to be there during the shows, but I always feel weird when my family is not around. ”She confessed that it is her sister “who knows when I am singing off key.” She laughed and added, “She makes the ugliest face in the audience like this (mimicking a lopsided grin) and I would tell her, ‘Why did you make that face?’ And she said, ‘You were bad!’”

But Malubay said that she really did not mind the brutally frank comments of her sister because “that encourages me to do better.” She narrated that her most embarrassing moment was when she was singing for an event. “Right at the beginning of the song, I slipped because of my heels,” she revealed. She said that if she were not chosen as the next “American Idol” it would not stop her from singing again. “I will learn from the experience and probably go back to school and finish my nursing course,” she said.

But in the meantime, she wants to fulfill her dream of becoming the first Asian Idol and “to become a better person, have a better relationship in the love department… and just continue to be happy.”
