The star-studded 56th birthday bash of action star Rudy "Daboy" Fernandez yielded touching displays of friendship, inspirational moments and comic relief.
Fernandez, who is being treated for ampullary cancer, appeared in good health and displayed energy and enthusiasm throughout the celebration.
His wife, actress Lorna Tolentino, said that Fernandez'positive outlook keeps her and their entire family going.
The brightest luminaries and most respected figures in local showbiz graced the occasion, including former Philippine president Joseph Estrada.
Estrada, who was one of the country's top action and dramatic actors of his time, said that his only wish is for Fernandez to get well.
Other superstars spotted at the party included Sharon Cuneta, Gloria Romero, Gretchen Barretto, Ruffa Gutierrez, actress and new ABS-CBN president Charo Santos-Concio, and of course, Daboy's closest friends Senator Jinggoy Estrada, Senator Bong Revilla and actors Philip Salvador and Tirso Cruz III.
Smack surprise
Comedy queen Ai-Ai delas Alas provided a comic twist to the occasion when she "ambushed" the former president at the party.
Delas Alas and the 71-year-old Estrada are set to begin shooting their very first film together next month, but the comedienne was determined to give reporters a sample of the "love scene" that she said she's dreaming of having with the former head of state.
"Bakit parang ayaw niyong lumapit ili-lips-to-lips ko kayo? Bakit ayaw niyo? Umiiwas kayo? (Why don't you come closer? I want to kiss you lips-to-lips. You don't like to? Are you avoiding me?)," she asked Estrada, who laughed and pulled away when she told him what she wanted to do.
Still, delas Alas had her way and cameras caught her and the former president touching their lips together.
Estrada went along with the comedienne's caper and said, "Maganda ka pala, 'no? (I never realized how beautiful you are)"
The still untitled film will be Estrada's comeback film after decades of being away from showbusiness.
"Matagal na ako wala sa showbiz kaya ikaw na magtuturo sa akin (I've been away from showbusiness for so long, so you have to show me the ropes)," he told delas Alas.
Sharon's approval
Reporters, meanwhile, didn't let megastar Sharon Cuneta get away without commenting on the buzz about her daughter KC Concepcion and actor and model Richard Gutierrez.
Cuneta said that KC is "not committed to anybody" at the moment and is free to entertain as many suitors as she likes.
She also said that she is perfectly fine about the prospect of Gutierrez and Concepcion getting together professionally or romantically.
"[For KC]to have Richard as one of the friends may konting relaxation sa akin sapagka't nandyan ang Tito Eddie tsaka Tita Annabelle. I have special feelings for the whole family.
"Richard is matino, and sikat and gwapo and more than anything he's a Gutierrez, anak ni Tita Annabelle at Tito Eddie kaya oks na oks sa akin pag yan ang naging nakapareha," she said.
(Richard is a gentleman, he's famous and good-looking and he's the son of Tita Annabelle and Tito Eddie so I totally approve if he and KC end up together.)
Not going to die
The last word and last message for the night naturally came from Fernandez, who reassured friends and colleagues about his condition. "I'll see you again next year, same time, yung place baka iba pero I'm sure magkikita pa rin tayo. Kaya hang on ha, wag kayong nalulungkot I'm not going to die," he said.
