THE QUEZON CITY PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE has recommended that actor
John Lloyd Cruz be haled to court for failing to comply with a Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) order requiring him to show his book of accounts.
Citing an April 15 resolution approved by the prosecutor’s office, the BIR said in a statement that Cruz was found to have violated the tax code.
In June 2007, the BIR issued a subpoena ordering Cruz “to appear and produce his books of accounts and other accounting records before the bureau’s chief of the legal division … on July 10, 2007.â€
“Despite receipt of the said subpoena, the respondent failed to appear on the date/time indicated and submit the desired documents,†said the resolution penned by Assistant Prosecutor Rogelio Velasco.
“All told, there exists sufficient grounds to bind over the respondent for trial†for failing to pay the correct amount of taxes to the BIR, the resolution added.
The BIR has placed some show biz and entertainment personalities on a list of priority sectors in which the agency wants to improve collections to ensure that its targets are met.
