9 celebrities who haven't aged well

http://www.mnn.com/

Time's not on their side

Time? Hello? Where'd you go? And I thought you were by my side!

We've taken a gander at a host of famous folks who have faced Father Time in a remarkably graceful manner, so now it's time to spotlight a few celebs, both living and dead, who haven't.

The factors that have elevated these personalities — several of them, once upon a time, were legitimate sex symbols — to "dear lord, that's what he/she looks like now?" status are various: years of hard drinking, heavy smoking and pill popping; obesity brought on by poor diet and stress-related overeating; disease including alcoholism and mental health woes; and entirely too much plastic surgery. And in a couple of instances, they've managed to make positive late-in-life improvements, proving that it's never too late for a drastic transformation. (You show 'em, Sally Struthers!)

We've also included a list of top contenders following our main list.

Brigitte Bardot

Unlike many well-preserved European sex symbols of yesteryear (see: Sophia Loren, Catherine Deneuve, etc.), Brigitte Bardot — the original European sex kitten — has, well, let herself go ... for a cause. After raising pulses across the globe during the 1950s and '60s in films such as "And God Created Woman" and "Contempt," Paris-born Bardot retired from acting in 1973 at the age of 38 to pursue her true calling: animal rights.

Over the past several decades, the woman who popularized the bikini has taken on numerous animal welfare-related causes and often provoked controversy in the process. Having sold many of her possessions at auction to fund the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals in 1986, the erstwhile actress has crusaded to stop the killing of dolphins in the Faroe Islands, the termination of wolves in Sweden, the massacre of baby seals in Canada, the slaughter of horses in France and the hunting of bears in ... New Jersey. In a more recent campaign, Bardot demanded that Russian authorities slap criminal charges on a man who forced a donkey to parasail over a beach.

Now 77 and living a semi-reclusive existence on a secluded, critter-filled villa in St. Tropez, Bardot's appearance — her "sun-weathered and unlifted features" — is shocking to those who have images of the actress circa 1965 emblazoned in their memories. In a rare interview with Vanity Fair in 2012, Bardot says: "I don't feel old or used up. And I don't have time to waste thinking about aging, because I live only for my cause. Today, there are more regulations on cars than for animals."

Marlon Brando

For a while there (the 1950s, to be exact), method actor and civil rights activist extraordinaire Marlon Brando was the hottest thing to walk the Earth. Fast-forward 30-plus years and, well, it’s a whole different story. During his lifetime, the mumbling thesp lived hard and ate hard, ballooning up to 300 pounds at one point in the mid-1990s.

A diabetic and a long-time crash dieter/binge eater, Brando's relationship with food, particularly ice cream, is the stuff of legends. Seriously, the trivia section of Brando's IMDb page dedicated to his eating habits is not for the weak of heart: Homemade Mounds Bars, 3 a.m. hot-dog runs, contraband Whoopers, pint after pint of ice cream, mountains of pancakes and loaves of bread stuffed with bacon.

Wrote the actor in his 1994 memoir "Brando: Songs My Mother Taught Me": "Food has always been my friend. When I wanted to feel better or had a crisis in my life, I opened the icebox. Most of my life, I weighed about 170 pounds, though when I had my nervous breakdown in New York, I dropped to 157. After forty, my metabolism shifted gears, but I kept on eating as much as ever while spending more and more time in a sedentary relationship with a good book."

Despite his love affair with high-calorie snacks, Brando, who died in 2004 at the age of 80 from pulmonary fibrosis, had time for a super-active romantic life with men, women and housekeepers alike, leaving behind 11 children and more than 30 grandchildren, Courtney Love being one of them apparently. Color us not entirely surprised.

Aretha Franklin

For a while there, the only thing instantly recognizable about Aretha Franklin, 70, was her emotive, smooth-as-butter singing voice — the Queen of Soul got big, real big, reaching such elephantine proportions that all the fanciful headwear in the world couldn’t distract from it.

But before we write Franklin completely off as a poorly aged, massively overweight celebrity, some fabulous news: Last year, the legendary performer and godmother to the late Whitney Houston appeared on "The Wendy Williams Show" after losing a staggering 85 pounds in the wake of a surgery to fix an undisclosed ailment (there were rumors of pancreatic cancer, which the singer denied).

Said Franklin of her slimmed-down physique: "I've been looking at a lot of pictures, and I was saying [to myself], 'You were entirely too fat for words.' ... I couldn't be feeling any better than I'm feeling right now." So how'd Franklin do it? Although many speculate that she underwent a gastric bypass procedure, the 18-time Grammy winner claims it was a combination of good, old-fashioned exercise and swearing off some of her favorite porcine delicacies: Chitterlings, ham hocks and pigs feet. "They're off my diet. They just really don't fit with Whole Foods. I had it for enough years that I don't miss it. You can't continue to eat things that are not good for you." And with that announcement, pigs everywhere came out of hiding to breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Jack Nicholson

Yes, at 75 years old, actor Jack Nicholson isn’t in the greatest of shape, but we can still see bits of that handsome devil (it's that mischievous grin) underneath the blubbery physique and the constant haze of cigarette smoke. Nicholson has certainly lived life to its fullest (and by fullest we mean filled with sex, drugs and a near record number of Academy Award nominations) and refuses to conceal his hedonistic past via Joker-esque cosmetic enhancements.

He told the Daily Mail in 2011: "I haven't had surgery. I don't want to be judgmental, but some of the things you see these days in Hollywood are a bit horrifying. I mean, I don't know what's going on here, but I don't want to scare people." He continues: "I mean, if someone can fool me with a new chest or lips, then I'm happy to be fooled. But I have to admit I have a prejudice against it. I'm not worried about wrinkles, in myself or in women. I find them interesting. I can't see so well, so sometimes I look in the mirror and I see how I was as a young man. But a few years back I noticed I don't have any hair below my sock line, and I thought to myself, 'Jackie, that’s an old man.'"

Elvis Presley

We needn't say much about the King and his descent from suave, hip-gyrating international sex symbol to bloated and bedazzled Vegas curiosity (a bloated and bedazzled curiosity that still managed to sell out shows, nevertheless) other than this: if you're trying to maintain your looks and health, prescription painkillers and peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwiches don't make a good combo.

Linda Ronstadt

Although some famous folks like Jane Fonda have discovered the fountain of youth in the form of political activism, that isn't quite the case with Grammy-winning, genre-hopping songstress Linda Ronstadt, 65, who ruled the airwaves and the arenas in the 1970s with hits like "You're No Good," and "When Will I Be Loved." Always one to speak her mind (more on that in a minute), Ronstadt eschewed the glamorous trappings that came along with being the lusted-after First Lady of Rock — her emphasis was always on the music — and her refusal to be pigeonholed made her even more sexy to her legions of admirers — who most famously included love interests George Lucas and former California Gov. Jerry Brown.

In recent years, Ronstadt has become hardly recognizable due to significant weight gain brought on in part by thyroid disease and her shift away from music-making to child-raising, which has kept her largely out of the public eye.

Ronstadt was the subject of both criticism and praise when she gave props and dedicated a song to polarizing documentary filmmaker Michael Moore during a 2004 performance at the Aladdin Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas. Her pro-Moore comments didn't sit too well with some audience members who booed the singer, tore down posters and walked out of the concert demanding refunds. The whole debacle, described by Aladdin President William Timmins as a "very ugly scene," resulted in Ronstadt being ejected from the hotel premises. Ronstadt is currently penning a memoir, due to be published in 2013 by Simon & Schuster.

Mickey Rourke

While most of the celebs on this list have eschewed going under the surgeon's knife and opted to age naturally, that isn't the case with actor and noted Chihuahua fancier Mickey Rourke.

After reigning supreme as the bad boy dreamboat of 1980s cinema — in addition to working with acclaimed directors such as Steven Spielberg, Barry Levinson, Nicolas Roeg and Francis Ford Coppola, Rourke specialized in steamy fare such as "9½ Weeks," "Angel Heart" and "Wild Orchid" — the actor's penchant for facial touch-ups drastically altered his appearance from rough 'n' hunky to rough 'n' scary. And his erratic, self-destructive behavior both on and off the set? That officially sunk his career. To be clear, most of Rourke's surgeries weren't performed to trick Father Time, but to correct injuries suffered during his stint as a professional boxer in the early 1990s. "Most of it was to mend the mess of my face because of the boxing, but I went to the wrong guy to put my face back together," Rourke, 59, told the Daily Mail in 2009.

Interestingly enough, Rourke, who experienced a legitimate career renaissance after appearing in Darren Aronofsky's heart-wrenching 2008 drama, "The Wrestler," has reportedly undergone further cosmetic surgery and lost a significant amount of weight to play openly gay Welsh rugby player Gareth Thomas, 37, in an upcoming biopic.

Sally Struthers

Sally Struthers, the frequently ridiculed "All in the Family" actress-turned-teary-eyed infomercial humanitarian, has long struggled with weight issues, although it's been reported that she recently slimmed down in a somewhat dramatic fashion.

An unnamed source relayed the news to the New York Post prior to Struthers' appearance as master of ceremonies at an event in New York City: "Sally has lost a lot of weight, and this is the first time she's been back to New York since. She's as tiny as when she appeared as the apple of Archie Bunker's eye on 'All in the Family.' She looks fabulous." It's unclear how exactly the actress managed to shed those excess pounds — dieting, fitness walking or an online correspondence course, perhaps — but we're happy to hear that Struthers, 63, has taken steps towards a healthier lifestyle considering she's devoted so much time and energy helping to improve the lives of those less fortunate.

Struthers, whose recent TV credits include re-occurring roles on "Gilmore Girls" and "Still Standing," last appeared as the titular character in a production of "Hello, Dolly!" at the iconic Alhambra Dinner Theatre in Jacksonville, Fla. Her hopefully not-too-tempting co-stars? Fried cheesecake and a BBQ pork shank served with warm potato salad.

Kathleen Turner

Our Lady of the Husky Voice, Kathleen Turner, was the quintessential femme fatale of 1980s cinema, thanks in part to sultry turns in films of both the steamy noir melodrama and silly noir cartoon caper variety. Whether playing a freelance killer-for-hire or a kinky part-time prostitute, this hardworking actress was a full-time sex symbol during her leading lady heyday.

Yet Turner, a former gymnast who performed many of her own stunts, slipped off the Hollywood A-list in the 1990s after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. (One highlight during this era being her turn as deranged, recycling-conscious suburban Baltimore housewife Beverly Sutphin in John Waters' 1994 black comedy, "Serial Mom.") Turner turned to booze as a form of self-medication during her battle with the crippling disease. Eventually, Turner's arthritis went into remission and she cleaned up after a stint in rehab.

Turner, now 57, rarely acts in films these days, but has picked up occasional TV work ("Californication," Nip/Tuck," the obligatory episode of "Law & Order") and appeared on stage as both Martha in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and opposite Jason Biggs as Mrs. Robinson in the Broadway production of "The Graduate." An active supporter of Planned Parenthood and Amnesty International, the fiercely intelligent and outspoken Turner wrote candidly about her struggles with rheumatoid arthritis, alcoholism and aging-not-so-gracefully in youth-obsessed Hollywood in the 2008 memoir, "Send Yourself Roses: Thoughts On My Life, Love and Leading Roles." As pointed out in a profile of Turner published by The Guardian after the release of the book, the actress hasn't undergone any cosmetic surgeries and can "eat a hefty BLT without even so much as a hint of mayo-induced panic." We like your style, Kathleen.
