Jessica Nicole Domingo Trisko of Canada (second from left) has been crowned Miss Earth 2007, besting 89 other contestants in the pageant held at the University of the Philippines Theater in Quezon City last Sunday night.
Jessica Nicole Trisko of Canada is the newly-crowned Miss Earth for 2007. Trisko bested 89 other contestants for the title at the climax of the awards ceremony Sunday night at the University of the Philippines Theater.
Trisko, 22, is a first-generation Canadian of Asian and European descent, and was raised in Vancouver.
Runners-up in Miss Earth 2007 were Miss India (Miss Air); Miss Venezuela (Miss Water); and Miss Spain (Miss Fire).
Last year's winner Miss Earth 2006 Hil Hernandez of Chile, passed on the crown to her successor amid enthusiastic applause.
The Miss Earth candidates officially began their quest for the crown two weeks ago, embarking on goodwill vists to various destinations in the Philippines and Vietnam. In keeping with the pageant's purpose and theme, all destinations highlighted the beauty of the environment and the importance of its protection.
It is the only major global beauty pageant that promotes care and preservation for the planets environment and ecology and requires its candidates and winners to embrace the cause.
The Miss Earth beauty pageant began seven years ago, when Carousel Productions, Inc. of the Philippines failed to get the rights to produce the Miss Asia-Pacific pageant.
From its humble beginnings, the Miss Earth pageant is now one of the top four beauty pageants in the world (according to GlobalBeauties.com) , the rest being the Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International competitions.
The pageant gained worldwide attention in 2003 when the special prize of "Beauty for a Cause" was won by Ms. Earth candidate Vida Samadzai of Afghanistan, who now resides in the United States.
Samadzai was condemned by the Afghanistan Supreme Court as well as her country's religious leaders after she competed in the pageant wearing a red bikini.
Her critics disagreed with her choice of attire for the pageant, noting that such is unlawful for an Islamic woman and against Afghan culture, which still requires its women to wear a head-to-toe covering called "burqa".
The pageant's 2004 winner, Priscilla Meirelles of Brazil, has been living in the Philippines for several years. She is the girlfriend of Filipino actor John Estrada.
The Miss Earth pageant is shown in 80 countries around the globe through STAR TV and The Filipino Channel.
