After much deliberation, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Office of Consular Affairs has agreed to issue dethroned Binibining-Pilipinas Universe crown holder Venus Raj a
Philippine passport.
“The DFA Office of Consular Affairs will issue a Philippine passport to Ms Maria Venus B. Raj...in the next few days,†it said.
The decision was made after an ad hoc committee, formed by the department to address Raj’s case, found the latter’s claim to Filipino citizenship credible “jus sanguinis†– meaning, “by right of blood.â€
“It is well-established that she was born to a Filipina mother, and following the jus sanguinis rule on matters of citizenship acquisition, she is a Filipino citizen who is entitled to a Philippine passport,†the DFA explained.
In an interview with Bulletin Entertainment, the 21-year old stunner expressed elation over the decision.
“I’m really, really happy. After everything I went through, this [the DFA’s decision] is most welcome news,†said she.
According to Raj she learned of the pronouncement from officials of the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Incorporated (BPCI) themselves.
“They [BPCI] called me up, asking why reporters from TV and newspapers are asking about me and that I have already been issued a passport. They asked me if it was true. Of course, at first I couldn’t answer. I couldn’t confirm it. I didn’t know that the DFA have already announced it earlier that day. I was only able to confirm it through my lawyers afterwards.â€
Raj is quite grateful to those who have stuck with her through the debacle, describing how it was quite "hard" and stressful" for her.
“I’m really thankful for all the support that the people have given me as it gave me strength. If only I could go out and thank each one of them personally, I would,†said she.
