I just saw the video last night and I was so amazed with the confidence of that woman. She was very honest that she's only 17 and it's her first time to join a pageant. Most of all, I was very amazed the way she she mentioned her PAMILY and being part of the TOUGH 10. Actually, she's one of the toughest in the TOUGH 10. I love it! It's a challenge of every Filipino English teacher.

There's a great need in the public school system in the Philippines right now. Our English is gradually declining. The government has to do something for it or else we will be in the bottom someday. According to a recent study, the reason why student's get low scores in Math and Science is the fact that English is the medium of instruction and the students find it difficult to understand. Considering that English has been a medium of instruction for most of the subjects since kindergarten, why is it that most of the students can hardly develop comprehension?

Teachers, it's time to change our views. If English is the medium of instruction, please speak English and use only the vernacular language for emphasis. Ask questions which favors higher order thinking skills (HOTS).

i felt bad also. it seems like the country has run out of deserving filipinas for a beauty and brain competition. the philippines is known to have a very good command of the english language and being 17 is not an excuse. if i remember it right, formal english lessons start in grade school.

It starts in kidergarten Mari. We start formal English lesson in kindergarten like identifying objects and the development of the intrapersonal linguistic skills of the child.

The Latinas do not know how to speak English that's why they ask for interpreters but it doesn't mean they don't know the answer. Ang interpreter lang mga express in English but that's about it. I think kining mga beauty contestants, ila sa jud unta i gauge ilang kaugalingon if worthy ba sila to represent sa atong nasud. She is pretty alright but that's about it. Yes, she tried her best but her best wasn't good enough. Maybe she is not really dumb but kinahanglan pa sya'g training. pareho ra gud na mag aspire ta as a, let's sa a fisherman. we need to learn first how to bugsay2x. As for them na ga aspire na mo represent sa atong nasud in that manner, ilang i train ilang kaugalingon una. Having said that, yes, makaluluoy sya. I felt so bad for her na wa sya katarong ug tubag ug na rattle sya na wa na gakadimao kay for sure, she felt so humiliated as well.

dili ko motuo that latinas do not speak english,maka sulti na sila but they just opted to get a better answer thru interpreters,abi ba diay sa tibuok pilipinas maka sulti ug English aber, Ruffa is lucky kay nag daku sya States maong maayo sya mag english but kung atong hunahunaon this is her way of training/lesson na gipangita nya then maka learn na sya thru this experience and lucky lang sya kay ing daug pa gyud,di man siguro na sya magpaka ulaw pod ba,give her time and chance to prove her worth to represent Philippines!

hahaha JANINA SAN MIGUEL... bb. pilipinas 2008-world.

i wasn't able to attend the bb. pilipinas 2008 this year due to some reasons. however, i'd the proceedings on GMA 7.

janina had passed the preliminary interviews and other churva before she was accepted in the bb. pilipinas. it means, she passed the bb. pilipinas standard: that's beauty, poise, fluidy and character) which is 80% and intelligence, 20%.

there's nothing wrong with janina who did heckling during the q and a portion in the finals. in fact, she just laughed what happened and she was sincere to show the person she is during that night.

when she will represent the country in the miss world in ukraine, europe, i think she doesn;t need to perfect her english. simple english as long as people can understand will do.

why?

because based n my experiences as part of the miss world organization press, i've had meet different girls..and only a few knw how to speak english. when giving instruction to the girls, it should be in simple english... and if ever there are girls who can't understand it, an interpreter is needed.

a kind heart is needed in the miss world. that is full of charity and hope of the million of children and AIDs victims in the world.

in the philippines, even to the remote villages, a beauty pageant is held... and the questions are expected to be in english and the candidates have to answer it in english...if sablay.. expect a hullaballo and boo boos from the crowd.

it's not easy to be on stage in front of people... expect a stage freight... but whatever it is, the girls are brave to face the phase of being a beauty queen.

hope to seeing janina san miguel in the miss world 2008 in ukraine...

the melanie marquez, jr makes history. shÃ© could not forgotten in the annals of beauty in the country.

I laughed out loud the first time I saw the youtube video. And rolled to the floor once I found out she won the title!

But after much thought, even the US President--in a Time Magazine article--has grammar slips and he earned degrees from Ivy League Schools (Yale and Harvard Business School).

It's so sad how people judge her from just one single cliche of a question. There could be worse than that in a barangay or barrio or town or kapilya or what-not beauty contests but wasn't captured in video.

And finally, my two-cents worth--she could have saved her ass from the embarrassment if only she answered in Tagalog or whatever her native tongue is, otherwise, SHE SHOULD DO HER HOMEWORK. DUH!

does she have a chance to improve in speaking english with the correct diction and grammar? yes just work double time
and yes. she also needs to be taught on how to answer questions! ugh. her answer itself was so far out
not even a word was correct.
