Precisely one year ago, rumors emerged that ABC was preparing to cancel the once immensely popular show “Ugly Betty,†inspired from the Spanish-speaking series of the same name. Back then, “Betty†was simply put on hiatus to make room for new shows; this time, it’s official: ABC has pulled the plug on the show, announcing the fourth season will also be its last, as Michael Ausiello of The Ausiello Files reports.
The news doesn’t really come as a shock, Ausiello himself says, especially since “Betty†took a serious hit in ratings in recent months. The good part to this development is that producers will now be able to come up with a brilliant season finale, one that will make fans happy and that will bring back to the show some of its former (ratings) glory. The bad part is that, aside from axing it, ABC also cut the fourth season short, to just 20 episodes of 22.
“This is about as ugly as it gets, folks. ABC has just informed Ugly Betty producers that the show’s current fourth season will be its last. What’s more, the network has trimmed Betty’s episode order from 22 to 20. Although not a complete shock given the show’s heinous ratings, the news is nonetheless a total bummer – particularly in light of Betty’s creative resurgence this season,†Ausiello writes, perhaps anticipating fans’ reaction to the news that the show will go off air for good.
“The good news is that ABC has given Betty’s bosses enough time to craft a satisfying series finale. Exec producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson confirmed as much in this joint statement: ‘We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.’ But back to the bad news: Betty is about to hang up her poncho for good,†the television insider further writes.
Just to set the record straight, there is no exaggeration to the “groundbreaking series†description, as the show made record ratings until just recently, when for some reason it slipped out of people’s preferences. The fourth and final season will air sometime in spring 2010 – for more updates on this, keep an eye on this space. - softpedia.com
