New York City, May 3, 2020 (Issuewire.com)  - Steven Pacholyk, the longtime historian of Gettysburg and former Licensed Guide, travels back to his hometown to pay tribute to the boys from Syracuse who fought in the Civil War.

This past week I spent time back home in upstate New York. On my return, my brother and I stopped to pay our respects to the boys who fought, suffered and sacrificed for the preservation of the Union from 1861-1865.

As featured below, the singular side of the monument depicts in stunning bronze, a moment of complete turmoil as the flag of the 149th New York has succumbed to battle damage during the fight for Culp’s Hill on the evening of July 2nd and morning of July 3, 1863 and color bearer Sergeant William Lilly utilizes his own leather straps from his knapsack and wood ammunition box fragments to bind the flagstaff together at a critical moment in the fight. Having the flag front and center and seen by his unit was critical to morale!

Both his story and this amazing monument that is the centerpiece of Clinton Square are simply beautiful and inspiring. The monument is the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial (1908) dedicated to the 12,265 men of Onondaga County who served in the Civil War. It was designed by architect Clarence Blackall, with a bronze sculpture by Cyrus Dallin.

I encourage you to take the time to visit such places to better understand the brave actions of these men and their dedication to the country.

For more information on both Sergeant Lilly’s heroic actions and his units’ actions at Gettysburg, I recommend the blog post of Gettysburg National Military Park Ranger Daniel Vermilya.

The actual battle scorn flag repaired by Sergeant Lilly can still be seen on display at the County Clerk’s office in Syracuse. Fascinating to see!!

The Civil War section of Woodlawn Cemetery in Syracuse, NY has a tall – 40 foot – Civil War monument of a soldier-sentry rising above a plot with the graves of 113 Civil War soldiers.  The graves and monument were dedicated in 1887 by the Grand Army of the Republic Lilly Post. The post was named for William Lilly (depicted above)

The Battle of Gettysburg took place in south-central Pennsylvania during the first three days of July 1863. This battle is considered by many to be a turning point of the Civil War. In just three days, the combined forces, led by Union General George G. Meade and

Confederate General Robert E. Lee, suffered nearly 51,000 casualties. Nearly a third of the forces involved became causalities in the epic three-day battle. For Robert E. Lee, it stopped his mid-war invasion of the northern states and put him on the defensive for the rest of the war. The American Civil War took place from April 1861 until Robert E. Lee surrendered his forces to General US Grant in April of 1865, officially ending the American Civil War.
