France scored twice in the final 11 minutes in Brasilia to beat Nigeria and reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

Nigeria's Emmanuel Emenike had a strike ruled out for offside before Vincent Enyeama saved Paul Pogba's volley.

Victor Moses cleared Karim Benzema's shot off the line after the break and Yohan Cabaye volleyed against the bar as France pressed.

World Cup 2014: Germany & Algeria deliver 'beautiful story'

By David Ornstein BBC Sport in Porto Alegre

The Germany players pile on Mesut Ozil after the midfielder sealed victory with a late second goal

In a World Cup that rarely seems to deliver a bad game, we probably should have known that Germany's 2-1 extra-time victory over Algeria would be another belter.

The pre-match atmosphere inside Estadio Beira-Rio suggested otherwise: a cold, wet, gloomy day in keeping with the low-key mood as kick-off neared in a tie Germany were expected to win.

There was little singing, dancing, colour or culture - at least not to the levels witnessed prior to most other fixtures in a tournament where the on and off-field flair has reflected that of Brazil itself.

Defeat was too much for Algeria defender Aissa Mandi, who gave away possession in the build-up to Germany's opener, to take at the final whistle

By Jonathan Jurejko BBC Sport

Angel Di Maria's extra-time winner carried Argentina into the World Cup quarter-finals after an unconvincing display against Switzerland.

The two-time champions dominated possession in a turgid last-16 tie, but were unable to break through until Di Maria swept in Lionel Messi's pass.

Switzerland defender Blerim Dzemaili headed against the Argentina post then prodded wide after Di Maria's winner.

Argentina will face Belgium, who beat the USA, in the last eight on Saturday.

It was a remarkable conclusion to a match that saw Argentina, rated among the favourites to win the World Cup, produce another distinctly average performance in neighbouring Brazil.

Di Maria's angled strike left Switzerland with just minutes to respond

By Ben Smith BBC Sport at the Arena Fonte Nova, Salvador

Story of the match:

*Howard makes most saves in World Cup history
*Kevin de Bruyne puts Belgium ahead
*Lukaku adds a second in second period
*Julian Green volley gives US late hope
*Game sees 56 efforts on goal

Belgium's golden generation earned the chance to live up to their billing as they reached a first World Cup quarter-final for 28 years with an extra-time win over the USA in Salvador.

This was another brilliant and breathless occasion. Belgium walk away deserving winners but only after a performance of incredible spirit and bravery from the US.

As it was, Kevin de Bruyne scored the goal that finally broke USA resistance in the second minute of extra time at Arena Fonte Nova. Substitute Romelu Lukaku fired in a second 11 minutes later to apparently end the contest.

United States keeper Tim Howard saves an early chance from Divock Origi with his legs

Argentina top Belgium, make semis

Argentina vs. Belgium: World Cup Quarter-Final Score, Grades and Reaction

By Alex Livie, UK Staff Writer
Jul 5, 2014

Matthias Hangst/Getty Images

Argentina booked their passage to the semi-finals of the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Belgium in Brasilia on Saturday.

It wasn’t a sizzling, free-flowing advert for attacking football, but it was a thoroughly professional performance built on Gonzalo Higuain’s early goal.

Belgium had ample chance to get back into the game, but they lacked the zip in the final third despite having the attacking qualities of Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne on the field.

Argentina Are Not Pretty, but They're Certainly Effective

By Guillem Balague, Guest Columnist
July 6, 2014

Matthias Hangst/Getty Images

BRASILIA, Brazil — During the last few weeks, most of the big motivational talk from Alejandro Sabella has been about the solidity of the squad. The strength of the group, the necessity of everybody working for each other, that nobody should doubt—even if they had not been impressive.

Argentina had been lacking spark, and chances were at a premium, so Sabella has been asking his team to compensate by working hard to recover the ball, to kill any spaces, to help those that make mistakes. It hasn't been pretty, but the criticism coming from home is wrong—Argentina are not playing badly. The talk of them not having style is wrong. They do, it is just that nobody likes it.

Van Gaal's Krull Gamble

Michael Steele/Getty Images

It may have seemed like a massive gamble to replace his starting goalkeeper specifically for the penalty shoot-out, but Van Gaal's decision turned out to be the right one, as Tim Krul saved spot kicks from Bryan Ruiz and Michael Umana to see his side over the line.

Not many managers would have had the courage to pull off their side's starting keeper in the 120th minute, but that is one of the reasons why Van Gaal is considered one of the best in the business.

What Next for Costa Rica Following Fairy-Tale World Cup Run?

By Karla Villegas Gama, Featured Columnist

This is just the beginning of a bright future for Costa Rica. Jorge Luis Pinto will be forever remembered as the man who took them to the quarterfinals for the first time in their history.

Los Ticos fought hard and fell versus Netherlands in the penalty kicks, but they showed the world that they are ready to shine in world football.

when, not if, germany wins, i'll get a big pizza from my banana republic's official driver.  and a restaurant meal from the banana republic.  i did not promise them anything.  basta ang germany makadaog, at whatever level, magdagan-dagan dayon ko around our dining table, bringing a small german flag.  maka-exercise pa ko. :)

Brazil vs Germany, World Cup 2014: as it happened

Dumped out: Brazil conceded four goals in the space of just six first-half minutes Photo: AFP

By Alan Tyers

FULL TIME BRAZIL 1 GERMANY 7 Astonishing. You would have to be a heartless swine not to feel sad and sorry for Brazil. The huge pressure, the crazed expectancy, all the nation's mania and hysteria heaped on the shoulders of a passionate and useful but ultimately limited football team. They cracked under the strain, no doubt, but there was more to this than just pressure, or bad tactics and team selection, or hopeless positional play, or an excellent German side packed with sharp passers and cool finishers. It was all of those things, and yet more.

It felt before the game that defeat would be a disaster for the players and people of Brazil. But this was not just a defeat. I honestly haven't really seen anything like this, I don't think anybody has. Read on for reactions from pundits and readers. I will sign off, just hopeful that the people of Brazil can get over this defeat and remember that, horrible though this feels, the players and the coach did their best. Glib and empty though it feels to say, it is only sport, and there has to be a winner and a loser. Sometimes defeat is unlucky, sometimes it is undeserved, sometimes it is humbling and horrible and heart-breaking and humiliating. But it is only sport. Goodnight.

some comments:

Alan Hansen: "I am distraught, I have been watching football for 50 years, and this is a low point. To come to Brazil and watch this."

Alan Shearer: "I genuinely worry whether some of these players will recover from this."

Henry Winter's match report: "This was an embarrassment to a famous shirt, a point their furious supporters made splenetically."

Paul Hayward: "The indignity of this night will haunt Brazilian football for generations."

David Luiz at the end of the match

Søren H. Assmann: "Germany is still in shock. Shock and awe. I still wish to hug all those crying Brazilian fans, they can't help it that their team just went tactically for all-out offense against the best counter break team on this planet. Some records: Klose's 16th World Cup goal, all-time record. Germany 222 World Cup goals, now two ahead of Brazil for most goals at World Cups. The 1:0 by Müller was the 2000th goal of the Deutscher Fussball-Bund (DFB) international football game history. And if the scoreline stands, it's the highest defeat of any team in a World Cup semifinal. And the highest defeat for Brazil ever."

Karla:  "Oh my god. This is unbelievable! As a German myself I should probably be more happy about my team winning this game... but.. I'm utterly gobsmacked -- a win really shouldn't feel this bad, should it? This is like watching a train wreck. But well. We're winning...so. I guess: Yay? Hm.."

Brazil vs Germany World Cup 2014: 45 minutes that destroyed Brazil's dream of winning the World Cup on home soil

Germans devastate hosts in first-half mauling

Simon Rice
Tuesday 08 July 2014

Conceding an early goal is never a good thing, but that's exactly what Brazil did against Germany.

And then they fell apart.

Thomas Muller got the German party started when he was left unmarked to bundle in a Toni Kroos corner after 11 minutes.

But it was Miroslav Klose's goal after 23 minutes that opened the flood gates. Some fine passing ended with the striker overtaking Ronaldo as the leading all-time goalscorer.

Kroos made it 3-0 just a minute later, rifling it in just inside the box.

Kroos then scored again on 26 minutes after a one-two with Khedira to make it 4-0.

On 29 minutes Sami Khedira  made it 5-0 after a lovely pull-back by Mesut Ozil.

THE REWRITTEN RECORD BOOKS

Germany's 7-1 humiliation of World Cup hosts Brazil sees the record books rewritten

By Richard Arrowsmith
04:49 GMT, 9 July 2014

Germany's 7-1 humiliation of hosts Brazil in the semi-finals of the World Cup had statisticians rewriting history practically every time Joachim Low's side touched the ball.

Seventh heaven: The Germans dished out the heaviest defeat in Brazil's history

Brazil's dreams of winning the tournament in their home country were effectively ended by a first-half masterclass that saw the Germans score five goals in the opening 29 minutes - the fastest time it has ever taken a team to reach that figure in World Cup history.

But, that wasn't the only record to fall on an astonishing night in Belo Horizonte...

Worst loss in Brazil history

The 7-1 scoreline was equal to the worse defeat in the history of Brazilian football.

The Selecao were beaten by 6-0 by fellow South Americans Uruguay in 1920 - nearly a century ago.

This was also Brazil's heaviest World Cup defeat, the next being their 3-0 loss to France in the 1998 Final.

By contrast, Spain only scored eight goals during the entire tournament to win the 2010 World Cup.

Most World Cup goals

Germany have now scored 221 World Cup goals, to move one ahead of their hapless opponents as the tournament's highest ever scorers.

Germany (10) only had two more shots on target than Brazil ( 8 ) in this match.

Germany scored two more goals tonight than England have in their past two World Cup campaigns combined.

Heaviest World Cup semi-final defeat

No other team has ever scored seven goals in the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Germany's six goal victory was the heaviest semi-final defeat in the tournament's history, ahead of West Germany's 6-1 defeat of Austria in 1954 and Uruguay's win by the same scoreline against Yugoslavia in 1930.

Germany netted as many goals in this semi-final as they had in their previous six World Cup semi-finals (1982-2010).

It is the first time since 1938 that Brazil have lost a World Cup semi-final, they had progressed in their previous six.

Most goals conceded by Brazil at World Cup

It was also the first time that Brazil had conceded more than five World Cup goals since 1938, although on that occasion they managed to comeback to beat Poland 6-5 after extra-time.

Furthermore, Brazil have not let in seven goals at home... ever!

Brazil have conceded eight in a game before during a 8-4 friendly defeat to Yugoslavia on 3 June 1934.

Most goals scored against the World Cup host nation

Brazil is the SECOND host team to let in seven goals in a World Cup match, following Switzerland's 5-7 defeat to Austria in 1954.

The next highest was Brazil who managed to score five against hosts Sweden in 1958 during a 5-2 victory.

All-time record goalscorer at World Cup

Miroslav Klose added salt to Brazilian wounds by netting his 16th goal at the World Cup finals to move clear of Ronaldo as the competition's all-time leading scorer.

And, Germany have NEVER lost a match where their talisman Klose has scored the first goal.

Standing alone: Miroslav Klose became the tournament's leading scorer with 16 goals

Muller scores Germany's 2,000th goal

Thomas Müller could yet take home the Golden Boot after moving to within a goal of Colombia's James Rodriguez when he scored the opener for his his fifth strike, which also happened to be Germany's 2,000 in history of Die Mannschaft.

Müller is the third player (after Cubillas and Klose) in history to score five or more goals in two different World Cups - he has scored 10 goals and provided six assists in just 12 World Cup matches.

Fastest brace in World Cup history

Toni Kroos' first-half double, which came in just 69 seconds, was the fastest brace in the history of the competition.

Fastest four goals scored in World Cup history

Joachim Low's side scored four goals in the space of six minutes (from 23 to 29). That has never been done in World Cup history.

Brazil's second heaviest defeat was probably the only other match that could compare in the misery stakes, despite it being a friendly, since it came against arch rivals during a 6-1 hammering in 1940.

Germany's highest half-time lead

After their opening blitz, Germany achieved their highest half-time lead in a World Cup game. Their previous best was 4-0 against Saudi Arabia at the 2002 tournament, which eventually saw them record their greatest win with an 8-0 victory.

Only three teams have previously trailed by five goals at half-time: Zaire (1974), Haiti (1974)... and Brazil (1938).

Most goals scored in a World Cup semi-final

No other team has ever scored seven goals in the semi-finals of the World Cup, and may never do so again.

World Cup: Germany delighted, astonished by Brazil rout

3:34 pm | Wednesday, July 9th, 2014

German soccer fans celebrate after their team won the Brazil World Cup semi final being played in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, between Germany and Brazil at a public viewing event called ‘Fan Mile’ in Berlin, Tuesday, July 8, 2014. AP

BERLIN — Germans awoke on Wednesday to discover the 7-1 demolition of Brazil in their World Cup semifinal was not a delightful dream but a scarcely-believable reality.

The front-page headline in the country’s biggest-selling newspaper, Bild, read simply: “7-1. No words for it!”

The paper dedicated its first six pages to pictures of the Germany players scoring and celebrating. And when it finally got to words, it declared the team “immortal” and wrote: “This 7-1 is worth as much as a title.”

Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup as both player and coach, tweeted: “What was that? Hard to believe.”

Thousands watched the match at Berlin’s outdoor fan mile despite wet weather. Germany fan Tamara Beck said: “It’s the best that can ever happen, that Germany scored seven times.”

Associated Press | Updated: July 10, 2014 11:03 IST

Kathmandu:  A teenager in eastern Nepal committed suicide after her favourite team Brazil lost badly to Germany in the World Cup semifinals, police said on Thursday.

Police said the 10th grade student was depressed and hanged herself from the ceiling on Wednesday morning in Bharaul village located 400 kilometres (250 miles) east of the capital Katmandu.

The teenager was identified as Pragya Thapa. Her mother found her hanging from the ceiling in her room. She was living with her mother and grandparents while her father was abroad working.

Police said they were investigating and the body had been sent for autopsy.

Argentina Beats Netherlands On PKs 4-2 In World Cup Semifinal

Wed, July 9, 2014 6:48pm EDT
by Andrew Gruttadaro

The final is set! After Germany stomped Brazil yesterday, Argentina put forth a valiant effort on July 9 to defeat the Netherlands 4-2 on penalty kicks and advance to the World Cup final.

After Germany blew out Brazil 7-1 in the first semifinal on July 8, it was almost a guarantee that the other match between Netherlands and Argentina would be closer, and sure enough, it was a nail-biter. It came down to the wire, with Argentina thrillingly pulling past the Netherlands to win the match on penalty kicks, 4-2.

Argentina Wins World Cup Semifinal In Penalty Kicks

Both teams didn’t make too much of an effort to take risks in the first half (anyone who’s watched the Netherlands in the knockout phase likely recognized this style of play), with both teams making feeble crosses into the box but never really threatening goal.

The scoreless bout continued into the second half, and though both teams pushed a little harder — Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuain actually appeared to score a goal, but the ball went just wide – neither could score by the time 90 minutes was up. With the score still 0-0, the game went into extra time.

It was more of the same for most of extra time — chances that fizzled out into nothing — and with neither team being able to score, penalty kicks were required. Talk about intense.

With a trip to the World Cup final on the line, Argentina was simply just a tad better – Lionel Messi, Ezequiel Garay, Sergio Aguero, and Maxi Rodriguez all scored, and goalkeeper Sergio Romero made enough saves, two, to lead the team to victory.

Argentina & Netherlands’ Roads To The Semifinals

This was a seriously marquee matchup — one of the best in Europe going up against one of the best in South America. Both teams had proven themselves leading up to the semifinal. On the back of a historic performance by Lionel Messi, Argentina won all three of their group stage matches, and then won close games against Switzerland and Belgium in the knockout phase.

The Netherlands also won all three of their group matches, though their run in the knockout stage was a little more shaky. The Oranje was just minutes away from being knocked out in the Round of 16 by Mexico before a Wesley Sneijder goal tied the match, and a late penalty kick shockingly won it. The Dutch then lumbered through their quarterfinal match against Costa Rica before winning it in penalty kicks.

Someone had to lose eventually — it just wasn’t the Netherlands’ day. Now Argentina will go up against the intimidating Team Germany on July 13 for the World Cup final. It is the team’s first appearance in the final since they won the tournament in 1986.

Vatican says no "two popes final" for World Cup

By Jean-Louis De La Vaissiere | AFP News
11 July 2014

Football-mad Pope Francis "might" watch the World Cup final on Sunday between his native Argentina and Germany but is unlikely to do so alongside his German predecessor Benedict XVI contrary to media speculation, the Vatican said.

"He might want to watch the final," Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said of Francis, formerly the archbishop of Buenos Aires Jorge Bergoglio -- a fan and card-carrying member of the San Lorenzo de Almagro club since childhood.

But a Vatican source said he "excluded categorically" the prospect of pope emeritus Benedict XVI, an academic theologian with a penchant for classical piano, sitting down in front of his television set to watch the face-off.

This handout picture released on April 27, 2014 by the Vatican press office shows Pope Francis (R) meeting with Pope emeritus Benedict XVI during the canonisation mass of Popes John XXIII and John Paul II at the Vatican on April 27, 2014

"It's really not his thing, he is not a fan. It would be like inflicting an infinite penitence on him at the age of 87," the source said, adding: "He has never been able to watch a football match from beginning to end in his life".

Benedict did like to keep informed on football results while he was pope and could at least comment on the big matches but he did not follow his home team, Bayern Munich.

That has not prevented a few jokes from doing the rounds in the Vatican ahead of the big game at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana.

Father Thomas Rosica, a member of the Vatican communications, quipped in a tweet: "Unconfirmed reports in Italian media: large quantities of mate and Fanta delivered to Vatican for private event Sunday" -- a reference to the famous Argentine tipple and the German fizzy drink.

- 'There would be a war!' -

The contrast could not be greater between Benedict and Francis, who is regularly updated on the activities of San Lorenzo and a team delegation came to the Vatican in December to give him their trophy after they won the national championship.

They also gave him the club's red-and-blue team colours with the words "Francisco Campeon" (Francis Champion) written on the back and the goalkeeper's gloves -- used in a save that helped them win the tournament.

This picture released on December 18, 2013 by the Vatican press office shows Pope Francis (R) holding the jersey of San Lorenzo's Argentinian football club as he poses with team president Matías Lammens (2ndL) at the Vatican

When he does his weekly tours of St Peter's Square on his "popemobile" before general audiences, the 77-year-old pontiff is regularly pelted with football jerseys and he has extolled the virtues of sport as a spiritual activity.

While the Vatican said Italian media reports about a "two popes final" are off the mark, its own official daily -- the Osservatore Romano -- earlier this month predicted that Argentine and Germany would reach the final.

In an unusual article for the normally conservative paper, former player Tommaso Damiani, a staunch Catholic, said that "there could be a final that will go down in history because of its unusual supporters" -- Francis and Benedict.

Ahead of the final, Italy's RaiNews made a photomontage with a real image of the two popes kneeling side by side -- except that each is depicted praying for their own team.

Argentine fans celebrate with a picture of Pope Francis at the end of the semi-final football match between Netherlands and Argentina of the FIFA World Cup in Sao Paulo on July 9, 2014

Conscious of his role as head of the Catholic Church around the world, Francis himself has been careful not to make any predictions about the World Cup or to reveal his passion.

There was one slip earlier in the tournament, however.

The Vatican affairs news agency I.Media reported that when a group of the Vatican's Swiss Guards invited him to watch the Argentina-Switzerland game in their barracks, he declined the offer saying: "There would be a war!"

Injured Neymar watches from the bench
Back-to-back home defeats for first time since 1940

Brazil's World Cup campaign came to a miserable end as the hosts were convincingly beaten by the Netherlands in the third-place play-off.

Goals from Robin van Persie, Daley Blind and Georginio Wijnaldum condemned Brazil to back-to-back defeats on home soil for the first time since 1940, following Tuesday's embarrassing 7-1 loss to Germany in the semi-final.

As an added insult, the hosts must now watch on as their fiercest rivals Argentina take on Germany for the chance to win the World Cup at Brazilian football's spiritual home, the Maracana, on Sunday.

Having backed their side so vocally throughout, home supporters turned on Brazil in the semi-final defeat on Tuesday, cheering opposition attacks and directing loud boos at their own players, and their frustration continued in the capital, Brasilia.

Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari bore the brunt of their anger, and his long-term future as national team boss is now in doubt.

Brazil's fans had packed homes, bars and fan parks to watch the action, leaving streets near empty, but the shock defeat by Germany left a question mark over how they would greet their team before Saturday's game.

There was little indication in the build-up that their interest had wavered, as thousands descended on the Copacabana beach fan park in Rio de Janeiro, while the Estadio Nacional was close to capacity.

When the teams emerged from the tunnel to go through their pre-match warm-ups, the players were greeted by loud cheers, which increased in volume when injured talisman Neymar appeared.

The striker - who scored four goals before a back injury ruled him out of the Germany debacle - was wearing a full training kit, but watched from the bench as his team-mates went onto the pitch.

It seemed the Brazilian fans were determined to support their team, but they also made it known they had not forgotten the defeat by Germany as loud boos rang out when the names of Scolari and beleaguered striker Fred, 30, were read out.

Fred was one of six starters against Germany who were relegated to the bench against the Netherlands, and several players from Brazil's 23-man squad are likely to have played in their last World Cup.

Whatever the future does hold, it was briefly forgotten about before Saturday's game as players and fans once again sang the Brazil national anthem in unison.

It was as rousing a rendition of the anthem as any throughout the tournament, but thoughts of redemption lasted barely three minutes, when Brazil captain Silva pulled back Robben and the referee awarded a penalty, which Van Persie expertly converted.

The home fans were stunned into silence, but it was to get worse barely 15 minutes later when they conceded a second. This time defender David Luiz headed a tame clearance straight to Blind and the Dutch midfielder found the top corner for his first international goal.

Brazilian faces were sullen, perhaps fearful of similar capitulation that saw them concede five goals in only 18 minutes against Germany.

Robin van Persie's goal was his first World Cup strike not to come in the group stages

They improved as the half wore on, but it was not enough for the players to avoid being booed as they left the field at the break.

The game slowed to a pedestrian pace in the second half, with Brazil fans continuing to boo Scolari every time the big screen in the stadium showed the 65-year-old's face.

Ramires flashed a shot wide before Oscar was booked for diving as Brazil strived to find some way back into the game.
